Literacy Circle Notes
1. What did you think of the fact that the children from Joseph (the father), and Niang the stepmother, were being treated differently/better than the children from Joseph and Adelaine's mother?
Answer: We thought that it was really unfair, because every child should be treated the same especially in this case, and every child deserves to be respected the same way. There should be equality between the children
2. Did anything surprise you about the fact that Adelaine's father was willing to pay Adelaine college, if she will win a writing competition?
Answer: We were quite surprised, because during this time period, girls were usually not working, and didn't go to college, and in Adelaine's family, everybody hated her.
3. What was going through your mind, when Adelaine decided to start in a medical school, and to become an internal specialist?
Answer: We were surprised, because at first she wanted to start a career as an author
4. Can someone summarize the part when Adelaine goes to America?
Answer: Adelaine moved to America, where she married, and decided to start a career as an internal specialist
5. How did you feel when Adelaine realized that her husband has been lying to her multiple times, and was not always being honest with her?
Answer: We felt angry, because we thought that it wasn't fair towards Adelaine, because she has been through a lot in her childhood and she didn't deserve that

Literary Luminary
1. Quote: "Don't trust anyone. Be a cold fish. I hurt no one, and no one can hurt me"
By: Adelaine
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine the main character made up this quote when she felt helpless, and when she came up with that idea.
2. Sentence: "I knew that I was the least loved child because I was a girl, and because my mother had died giving birth to me."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine describes why her family hate her so much, and she describes what had happened the reason of the death of her mother.
3. Sentence: "My mother died, two weeks after my birth, with five doctors at her bedside. She only was thirty years old, and I had no idea what she looked like."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine talks about her feelings about her mother, and explains her death in detail again.
4. Sentence: "I knew that my family hated me, but I did have one person, that loved me and took care of me, and that was my aunt Baba."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine talks about her life, and about a person that actually loved her.
5. Quote: "No matter what else people may steal from you, they will never be able to take away your knowledge."
Reason for choosing, because those are very wise words, coming from a young girl, and because it was something that Adeline try;y believed in.

The Chocolate War - Summarizer
The Chocolate War
For my job, I was the Summarizer of my group. I had to write a summary on what we read for our first group meeting together. We all chose to read The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. We read until Chapter 10 and it was 67 pages long. The book switches from one scene to the next and back another scene so it might be a little confusing.
The book started off with a boy named Jerry Renault trying to make the football team as a high school quarterback. Then in the next scene, Archie, the Leader of the Vigils, who are an organization who run the school, and Obie, his assistant, are selecting who should be in the Vigil group or not. They select 10 people, one of which includes Jerry Renault. During the selection, we learn that Jerry lives alone with his father because his mother died of cancer. Then a couple of days later, Archie ordered twenty thousand boxes of chocolate for the school's annual fair. So they are selling double to make the school satisfied. Then the interviews begin. The first person to be interviewed was Roland Goubert, the wide receiver of the school football team. He was very nervous because of the way Archie acted towards him and he did not have a clue what he was doing there. He was told a mission by Archie. His mission was that he had to go to a classroom, but not just any classroom, but Brother Leon's classroom, and unscrew all of the screws inside the room. During the day, before the mission, Brother Leon made a straight "A" student think he was a cheater but it was just a fake thing to do and made all of the other people in the class look bad and look like clueless kids. That night, as the Goober started unscrewing everything in the classroom, it took him two hours to do one row of seats and thought it would take him all night and all day the next day but he got help from about a dozen people in black clothes and masks who helped him throughout the night and they finished in three hours.
