Book Post-Nemke

Skulduggery Pleasant the Kingdom of the Wicked
Derek Landy
606pg

I am rereading Skulduggery Pleasant the Kingdom of the Wicked. It is about a skeleton detective and his assistant solving mysteries. The most interesting part is when they find the powerful sorcerer Argedion. I thought that that was interesting because it was something that I really did not expect. It was cool because I think that I would never be able to find the location. They were hidden in an area of the Alps that is guarded by Yetis.

Title: The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry

The Giver

This week in The Giver I read about Jonas receiving memory of starvation and Jonas didn't really like that because it gave him spasms in his stomach, but The Giver said you have to keep these memories because it will help you in the future. The most interesting thing was Jonas gave memory to Gabriel but Jonas was not suppose to do it because Jonas is not a Giver yet.

The word I didnt know was "rhythmically" and the sentence is "Still patting rhythmically, Jonas began to remember the wonderful sail that The Giver had given not long before". (The Giver 110) The word means "Periodic,as motion  or a drum beat".

The Host

Hello Everyone!
This week, I have chosen to start a new book. The name of the book is called "The Host" and the author, that is very well know is called "Stephenie Meyer". The number of pages the book has is 617. The picture is located at the very bottom of the post, after all my writing.

Basically, my story takes place in the future. In the future, earth has been colonized by the "Souls". The "Souls" are an alien race that inhabit human bodies, and as we get into the book, and as we finish the first couple of chapters, we learn that there are only a few humans who's bodies have not been inhabited by the alien group. Melanie Stryder is one of the few humans that have not been taken control of the Souls and she later meets the rest of the remaining humans. As the book continues, Melanie is taken over by a Soul and fights him while the Souls attempts to get inside her head, and see all her memories, and since Melanie has meet the remaining humans, if the Soul accesses her memories, he will be able to see the remaining humans and take control over them.

The most interesting part of the book, is in my case, the very beginning. The reason the beginning is most interesting is because it all starts with the major event, and I was very confused because they did not say what "Souls" were, etc, but then when they started giving hints and in some way filling in the blanks, you started to understand more, and when you understood everything that' when the story got interesting.

"Because he was a soul, by nature he was all things good: compassionate, patient, honest, virtuous, and full of love." (Meyer 1) This sentence was on the very first page, and the world was "virtuous". The definition of virtuous is having, or showing moral high standards.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Title of the book: The Giver

Author: Lois Lowry

Number of total pages: 219

"The Giver" is about Jonas, who lives in really strange community, much different that ours. When I started reading the book I thought that it was really boring but as I kept reading it became interesting. In that community people can is only in black and white and the biggest difference is that everyone cannot be better that the other people in something so everyone has to be the same. The community gives you a job when you become twelve years old.
The most interesting part for me was when Jonas became twelve years old and he got his job for his entire life. That job was not simple but the most important job in the community, "The receiver of memory".

The word i chose is "exempt"it is in this sentence "from this moment you are exempted from rules governing rudeness" (Lowry 68)

exempt=verb=free from an obligation others must do.

This week, I am currently reading the book The Giver . It is a book that our whole grade is reading together but I am trying to finish the book before others. It is a very enjoyable book that was not very interesting in the beginning but as I kept reading, it became very fascinating. The book is about a twelve year old boy named Jonas, living in a different environment and community than ours. In their community, people can only see in black and white, they say "released" to kill someone by law and it is rare to see people with light colored, or "pale" eyes. In this community, when you become a year older, you receive a gift from the community. Everyone has the same birthday which is December first. When you turn one, you receive a family. When you are nine you receive a bycicle and so on. As you tun twelve, you receive an assigned job. Until this twelveth birthday, he has no idea what kind of job he will receive. But then, he does not receive a job, he gets selected as the Reciever of Memory which is the most important elder job in the community. A word I came across while reading that I did not know the meaning of was the word dismayed. "But he was a litle dismayed that his schedule left no time, apparently, for recreation." Dismayed means to be alarmed or a sudden complete loss of courage. This word and sentence was on page 68th page of The Giver. (Lowry 68)

The Giver

Title; The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
Number of pages: 179

This week I managed to read the whole book called "The Giver". The book is a great fantasy novel that is very unusual. The book talks about a boy named Jonas, his community that is much different than any others, and about Jonas becoming a Twelve. He lives in a community where there is no color and where everything is the same. Unlike other kids Jonas is very special and has a gift that not many have. In the ceremony of Twelve Jonas receives a job that will change his life forever. This book is fabulously written and has some great words that you cannot find everywhere. I couldn't decide between the two words; fugitives and meticulously. The meaning of meticulous (meticulously) is extremely careful and precise and also extremely concerned with details. The sentence I found this word in is: "But that evening everything changed. All of it-all the things they had thought through so meticulously- fell apart" (Lowry 163) The other word that to me sounded very interesting is fugitives. The meaning of fugitive (fugitives) is running away or fleeing away as from the law. The sentence is: "Together the fugitives slept though the first dangerous day" (Lowry 168) I really enjoyed reading this book because of all the interesting vocabulary it contains.

Alex- The Spook's Tale

The Spook's Tale

In the book i am reading "The Spook's Tale" i think that the most interesting part for me is when Tom Ward who is the Protagonist goes into a abandoned cottage to seek refuge from a storm. Tom is unaware that he has actually stumbled into a witch's den and quickly hides and he sees the witch approaching.

Unknown word- Hearth

While on the other hand an Imperial Star Destroyer is heading for the planet.

Stargirl
Jerry Spinelli
208 pages

"Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli is about how a new girl comes to town. Her name is Stargirl. Stargirl used to be home schooled but is this an excuse for the way she dresses, how she dances around the cafeteria singing happy birthday, how she puts a curtain and a flower in a vase on her desk, and how she carries a pet rat in her school bag? Stargirl has definitely pushed her limits when she becomes a cheerleader and cheers for both teams, this all seems harmless but the school has grown fidgety in her presence anyone who becomes her friend has to be avoided. The school has been given a taste of someone who is different, who doesn't care what other people think of her, this is Stargirl. “She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a cork board like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.” (spinelli, 24)
The word I chose from this passage is, elusive. Elusive is an adjective and it means, "eluding clear perception or complete mental grasp; hard to express or define: an elusive concept." (dictionary.com)

The Giver by Lois Lowry (Chapter 11)

The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
# of pages: 219

The Receiver placed his hands on Jonas's shoulders filling his mind with different memories, first he remembers sledding down a hill giving him a cold feeling. He also felt snow tingling onto his tongue. The Receiver started explaining to Jonas that the people in the community didn't have memories about snow or sledding since they had removed these things for a purpose. Apparently, the hills made it hard to move different goods and the snow made it hard for the community to grow crops. He also explains that all the memories Jonas is having are from the time before they had "sameness." Jonas wished that with the Receivers power if he was able to bring back the sledding on the hills and the crystal white snow but he replied and said that he didn't really have power only honor and that they are two very different things. After Jonas's memory of snow and sledding he gets a memory of sunshine. Earlier in the book when Jonas was announced Receiver of Memory they said that his job would be full of pain. The memory of sunshine gave him his first bit of pain, it was a small sunburn. Near the end of this chapter Jonas was asked by the Receiver for him to not call him that anymore since Jonas was the new Receiver but to call him "The Giver."

I thought this chapter was extremely interesting since we get the first glimpse of Jonas's job as The Receiver of Memory. Also at the end of this chapter there is some foreshadowing when we find out that the "old" Receiver wants to be called "The Giver." I look forward to reading the following chapters since I'm not quite sure what will happen and if Jonas will be able to handle all the pain that he will experience throughout being The Receiver of Memory. Also, I would like to find out what other memories Jonas will have along the way...

Sentence word was in: "This time, as he lay basking in the wonderful warmth, he felt the passage of time." (Lowry, pg. 82)

They are going to another journey with the Gandalf the white. The word that I didn't know citadel which means fortress, typically on high ground, protecting or dominating a city. The sentence that this word was used is "Flapping and tugging the flags and white standards of the citadel" ( The Return of the King P. 36)

Živeti Slobodno

Ziveti Slobodno
Nick Vujicic
Number of pages: 240

The book that I've been reading beside the books that we are assigned to read is Ziveti Slobodno by Nick Vujicic. Many of you have probably heard for nick Vujicic. He is the famous Australian/Serbian man who travels though out the world and proves people that everyone could be happy, and he tries to learn them to stay positive. I read 90 pages of the book so far, and I really like it. This is book on Serbian, but of course, there is translation on many other languages such as English.
This book, Nick wrote on his own, it's an autobiography. He is a man without legs or hands. Actually he has a small left foot, which is often called 'chicken foot' because it looks like it.
He describes his early childhood, which was not easy. He was bullied by almost all kids from his school, but he was always trying to stay positive. He was always wondering: ''How am I gonna find a wife, if I can't give her a ring?'' Sometimes he fell in depression, and one day he decided to kill him self by jumping of a chair and breaking his neck. His mum saw it and luckily, stopped that tragedy. Further, he talks about his family, and his beautiful sister.
It was really hard for me to find unknown words, because this book is on Serbian, and I know many words on my mother tongue language, but still I found one:
Najzad. (English translation is ''finally, at least)

I've heard for this word but i was never sure what does it mean. Sentence:'' Kad su, najzad, stigli u bolnicu i pripremili sve za operaciju, ispostaviolo se da su sve sale zauzete.''(Vujicic 73)

The sentence I found it in it "Teagan said, hustling for the kitchen as fast as her stiletto- heeled Jimmy Choos would carry her." (page 61/62 Kate Brian) the definition I found was "To move or act energetically and rapidly"(Wordnik)

Немили-Недраги

Title: Немили-Недраги (Dumb - friendless)
Author: Иван Вазов (Ivan Vazov)
Number of pages: 128

Немили - Недраги (Dumb - friendless) is a novel by Ivan Vazov and it's one of the earliest examples of modern Bulgarian literature . Even today it is among the most popular works of its era and it takes place in a traditional Bulgarian education.
The novel presents the life of the Bulgarian revolutionary emigration in the years just before the liberation. The novel is recommended for 11th grade. Since I am only 7th grade and the novel is written in 1883, there are lots of words that we don't use today and I don't really understand some of them. However, for most of the words there is an explanation at the end of the page. I have watched the movie last year and I can remember that it's really old and you can't hear most of the words.
One of the words that I didn't know is:
йерархически (in English: hierarchical)
In Bulgarian  it means something ordered by size.

На една страна, въз една висока усамотена и измокрена полѝца, стоеха йерархически наредени чашите и шулците. (Вазов, 29)
On one side, on the high and solitary wet shelf, stood hierarchically ordered glasses and crocks for wine. (Vazov, 29)

There are three old words in this sentence.  - полѝца (shelf), йерархически (hierarchically), шулците (crocks for wine) ...
Can you imagine how many old words are in this novel?! ........

I am sorry if I made some mistakes in this blog post but it's really hard to translate these old Bulgarian words when I don't know their meaning in Bulgarian.

My favorite part in this read is when Artemis outwits Jon Spiro (one of the antagonists) and escapes with over a billion dollars.
As for the word I do not know I chose “pneumatic”. The sentence is “The doors opened with a pneumatic hiss.” (Colfer 52).
The definition for pneumatic is: Containing or operated by air or gas under pressure.

Tame (incomplete)

 Author: EmilyTheReader (Emily)

Number of Pages: 204 and counting

Tame

The book I am reading this week is called "Tame" by a young author called Emily (username: EmilyTheReader). The book's genres are teen fiction and a bit of romance. The book is not actually finished because Emily updates the book every Thursdays or Fridays or whenever she has any free time. As far as I have read, Farrah is the good girl, a bit embarrassing, friendly, an animal lover, sarcastic, and really short. Cameron: He is the bad boy, he is popular only for his looks. He loves to embarrass people all the time, but no one messes with him. I am not sure when the book will end but I sure hope that it has a great conclusion! One word I did not know the meaning of is conclave. The sentence was "The group had to think of a good spot, so they chose the library as their conclave". (pg. 104)  Conclave means a secret/private gathering.

Inkspell
Cornelia Funke
635 pages

3/3/2013

The book Inkspell by Cornelia Funke ends with a death. In the end, Meggie's father, Mo, finishes binding a special book, which, once his name is written in that book, renders the Adderhead (the main villain) immortal. In return, the Adderhead sets all of his prisoners free. During that time, Farid, one of the main characters, gets stabbed by Basta, a villain who has been in the story from the beginning. Farid dies, but Dustfinger steps in and brings Farid back- but in exchange for his own life. The main character does not achieve their goals because this book is the second book in a series of three, so the conflict will probably be solved in the third book.

CATCHING FIRE

Catching Fire
Suzanne Collins
471 pages

I have finished the book and it was such an amazing book! I liked it better then the first one and it was really cool and original and sometimes i felt sad and sometimes happy, there was a wide variety of feeling and it was just amazing one of the best books i had ever read!
The ending is a bit confusing though because Katniss is chosen to compete in the quarter quell with her boyfriend Peeta. They are in the games and have allies with a few other people and they all are trying to escape the arena which is a huge shock for the public and the capitol. Katniss has already cheated in the first hunger games by getting two people to win and she's done it again so the capitol is very very mad, katniss knows this so her and peeta and the others run as fast as they can but they see hovercrafts. These hovercrafts were sent from the district to capture peeta and katniss and all the others so katniss thinks that maybe she should kill peeta so that the capitol can't torture him and peeta won't have to go through that pain but it's too late for that because as katniss is escaping, the hovercraft takes peeta. Katniss is safe but Peeta is in huge danger and at the beginning of the games katniss set one goal for herself and her goal was to keep peeta safe even if it meant death. So she has failed her goal. The book ends with her escaping and peeta still kidnapped and she learns that her home and district has been blown up but her family is safe. The book ended with a cliffhanger and i can't wait to read the next book.
