1984 - Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonist of the story is Winston Smith. Winston Smith is 39 years old. He is employed at the Ministry of Truth, London, located in Oceania. He lives in a world which is shaped by the ruling Party and the country leader Big Brother. Winston is part of the established system. He has a safe job with the Government, his career path is established and livelihood guaranteed.  His job involves the revision of historical documents and their rewriting in line with the Party’s rules and vision.  

However, Winston does not feel happy and fulfilled. He feels that the system is stifling free spirit, free enterprise and individual freedoms. The prevailing feeling in the society is that of fear and oppression. He feels that what he is doing is not morally right and is contrary to his convictions and views.  He feels that with his daily job he is indirectly contributing to the oppression of the population in Oceania and reinforcement of the ruling Party. He feels that his life is void of any meaning and purpose, since he cannot control it or influence it. He feels no passion for his work and he feels no enthusiasm for life

Winston cannot remember people from his childhood, especially his mother who had disappeared years before.  He investigates the life in London before the Revolution, eager to trace his roots. However, the Party managed to eradicate all remnants of daily life in the past.  He realizes that what he is doing in his daily job is exactly to further eradicate and reshape history for future generations.

Winston is thorn by emotions and feels guilty. Guilty of being part of the system and guilty for not being brave enough to rebel openly.

The Party, however, does not completely control Winston. Winston tries to rebel and undertake activities that are not in conformity with the established order.  He starts keeping a diary, he enters into a relationship with a girl and he discusses the possibility of joining the Brotherhood, in order to overthrow Big Brother. He is overwhelmed with fear but he tries to rebel.

In Oceania, freedom of thought is prohibited and sanctioned. Keeping a diary and expressing one’s thoughts is illegal.  Winston secretly buys an illegal diary in which he writes statements like: “Down With Big Brother.” In doing so, he commits the worst offense, “thoughtcrime,” a term for the “essential crime that contained all others in itself.”   He enters into a relationship with Julia, a fellow employee at the Ministry of Truth. Relationships are not allowed either, since they are sign of promiscuity, which is prohibited. Feelings are not encouraged, either, and marriages are, as a rule, loveless. At the start of their affair, Julia and Winston consider their desire for one another as a political act against the Party.  As the relationship develops, they are led by feelings and end up discussing the repressiveness of their lives and the possibility of joining the Brotherhood, a secret group whose purpose is to overthrow Big Brother and reinstall personal freedom and free enterprise in Oceania.  Winston feels that as a group, they can defy the order and change the system.  He is a positive and brave figure, since he decides to act and defy the system that he has helped create.
 
The antagonist is the Party and the system in Orwell’s society. The Society is shaped by the Party and dictator Big Brother. Big Brother controls life in Oceania through the four ministries of Peace, Love, Plenty, and Truth. The Party rules, regulates and monitors life in Oceania. The Party carries out government policies in Oceania, rations food, allocates clothing and selects social activities.  The Party suppresses individual freedom, freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom to act. Any actions and thoughts against the Party are severely sanctioned. The prevailing feeling among the people is the feeling of repression and fear.  The Party monitors every move and expression with telescreens, hidden microphones and by way of spies.  The Big Brother posters are all over the city reminding people that “Big Brother Is Watching.”  The Thought Police, Big Brother’s secret militia, is used by the Party to suppress any sign of revolt by eliminating all who think or behave in a disloyal way.

The Party sanctions all actions against the established order and rewards loyalty and devotion to Big Brother.  The Party intensifies feeling against Emmanuel Goldstein and the Brotherhood, a group of people thinking differently. They are qualified as Enemy of the People. The Party counts on the obedience of the people when facing the sanctions and physical elimination. Fighting the Party requires ultimate courage and cannot be done on the individual level. This is the society that Winston is an active part of and that does not agree with, morally.  Hence, his frustration and the moral dilemmas that he is facing in the novel.

           My book is very complex as it is a fantasy. There are many antagonists, including the fact that one of the antagonists is as well a protagonist. There are three main antagonists, Chauncey Langeais, Dabria, and Patch. As I mentioned previously, one of the antagonists is a protagonist, the two protagonists are Patch and Nora.

        Nora Grey is the main protagonist out of the two. Romance was never part of Nora's plan, shes never been interested in any of the guys at school. Although, her best friend Vee no matter what still keeps pushing Nora to go out more often and meet new guys. Only until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes he draws Nora to him, against her will. But, after all of the terryfing encounters, Nora is not sure if she who to trust him. He seems to be everywhere and seems to know more about her closest friends than she does. She isn't sure whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide.When she tries seeking answers she find herself near a truth that is more unsettling than anything she felt. For she is right in the middle of a battle in between the immortal and those who have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides she has to choose wisely or else her decision could cost her life. Since Nora is a descendant of the Nephilim Chauncey Langeais, who was Patch's Nephilim vessel, Patch needs to sacrifice a female descendant from the Nephilim vessel in order to become human which was Nora. He planned on sacrificing her life until they fell in love. At the end of Hush Hush, Nora sacrifices herself in order to kill Chauncey and save both hers and Patches lives, although Patch rejected her sacrifice. Meaning that Nora came back to life, but it ruined all the chances of Patch becoming human.

     Patch Cipriano is one of the antagonists and protagonists. Patch is a fallen angel, with a desire to save and kill Nora. Initially he transfers to Noras high school in order to be able to kill her easier, but he is unable to since he falls in love with her, despite the fact that he cannot feel anything physically. It is explained in the book that it feels as if he is experiencing everything to a pane of glass, he can experience emotions but he cannot feel physically. He is a very powerful fallen angel with many enemies. He was lost, confused, alone and all he wanted to do was become human until he met Nora. Patch is faced with a very big choice when his ex-girlfriend, Dabria (one of the other antagonists) tells him he needs to save her from death in order to become a guardian angel or become human by sacrificing her. Patch is sly, brooding and frequently leaves Nora tongue tied and furious. Nora finds out that he is a fallen angel and then learns about his past throughout the book. He lost his angels because he fell in love with a human girl and tried to be with her. Although, when he failed to take control of a human body his wings were ripped out when he attempted to return to heaven. Although, when he rejects Nora's sacrifice he become a guardian angel, and he regains his ability to fly although he still cannot feel since he hasn't yet "earned" the right to feel back.

   Chauncey Langeais/Jace is one of the main antagonists as he wants to kill Nora. He is Patchs former Nephilim vessel who wants revenge on the fallen angel for tricking him into swearing an oath that allows Patch o take over his body for two weeks during the Hebrew month of Cheshvan. He inherited the power to create illusions from his father, he uses his powers to frighten Nora several times throughout the books. Since Patch cannot be hurt because he cannot feel any pain physically Jules/Chauncey believes that the only way to hurt patch is emotionally, by hurting Nora (more precisely killing her).

   Dabria is Patch's ex. She doesn't cause too much trouble except for attempting to kill Nora since Patch wanted to stay in the human world for her but Dabria wanted Patch to go back to being an angel so that they can be together. 

Protagonist and Antagonist of the book Gathering Blue

So far in the book I am reading, "Gathering Blue" we have a clear protagonist but not a clear antagonist.

Protagonist

The protagonist in this book is a girl named Kira who has one deformed leg. Her age is not certain but I think she is around 12 years old. At the start of the of the book she suffers because of the loss of her mother. She also has no father meaning that she is now left on her own with only one healthy leg. But, not everything is bad for Kira. She actually excels at weaving and is very gifted in that regard. This whole book is based on her life and she is very important to the story. Even though that she has some natural issues preventing her from having a normal life she also has some other obstacles.

Antagonist

There are many antagonists in this book like nature... But the main one so far is this one girl called Vandara. She is a pretty,  cruel, and strong women. Her goal is to drag Kira into the Field of Leaving after Kira's mom's death. She is doing this for a couple of reasons. One is that she just doesn't like Kir and the other is that she want's to acquire some of Kira's property. She will do everything she can to succeed in her goal. She is also a liar.

The protagonist of the book Ender's game is Ender. Ender is a nine year old child who was submitted to Military School early, even though you are accepted as a twelve year old. Ender is the one of the smartest people in the world. He has hacked every system in the school, like the strategic video games. He started off as a Launchie, which are the rookies of the school. Then he was accepted to an army, which is where you learn to fight in null gravity. And at the end of his training as a nine year old, he became the youngest commander, which is leading one of the twelve armies. He started leading the Dragons army, which used to be an army in the past but it was so bad at the battles against other armies that the school had to forget the army. But now it is back with the most brilliant mind in the school. Ender is given a bunch of losers and beginners in his army, no elite fighters. He has to teach them to fight and win. This is the middle of the book, so he probably fights against the aliens and buggers in the later part of the book. 

There is no antagonist in the book in the meantime but my guess is that the teachers of the school are because they make all of these kids fight against each other. And they make these kids go crazy with all of this strategic stuff.

Protagonist and Antagonist in 1984

Winston Smith, the protagonist in 1984, lives in a totalitarian “utopia” where everything is controlled. The Party and the country dictator Big Brother make sure nothing is out of the ordinary and everything follows the set of rules. Everything is regulated and controlled just like in The Giver by Lois Lowry. The Party and Big Brother have absolute control upon their citizens and the citizens have no individual power. However Winston does not agree that the society he lives in should be like this he wants to stand. Winston opposes the forces however faces challenges in the way O’Brian, The party and Big Brother all disagree about Winston decision and will do anything in there power to stop him from opposing them. The Party and Big Brother have the most power and are the most important antagonists.

Winston is a thirty-nine year old who works at the Ministry of truth in London, Oceania. Working for the Ministry and being a citizen he as any other citizen is part of the totalitarian oppressive system. He modifies “historical” documents in order for them to fit with the modern ideas and rules of the Party.

Although Winston's job is safe and he has a decent future he is not happy. He has to work for a system which he does not support. Winston Smith believes the system bans individuality, blinds people from the truth, stops development and is not morally right. Winston does not believe in tyranny and feels oppressed and believes that it is his tuty to stop this injustice government. Everyday he goes to work to do something he believes is morally wrong and he cannot continue doing it. He thinks that what he is doing is just making it worse for the people and providing power to The Party further oppressing the poor powerless citizens. He tries to investigate what it was like in London before the Revolution but soon realizes that all the records have been wiped. There he begins to understand that what he is doing everyday is just this terminating all records of the past so that no one could stop the development and growth of the gruesome governmental system.

Only now understand what he has done he starts to feel horrible and guilty and tries to protest and rebel against the inhumane system. Winston starts doing things which do not harmonize with the already strongly established order and system. Winston Smith starts keeping a diary, embarks on a relationship with a female and ponders about the possibilities of entering the Brotherhood as to overthrow the powerful Big Brother. He is filled with fear and is afraid but still tries to rebel.

In Big Brothers political system all intellectual individuality is prohibited, one is not allowed to think and have those which do not conform with the one of The Party. Expressing one's thoughts and having a diary is illegal as well. If the Big Brother cannot watch and know what a person is thinking while doing something then that something is illegal. Big Brother and The Party have to be absent and all knowing. In Winston's Diary he express ideas which do not comply with the government's ideas which say the government should not prevail but fall to ashes. Winston enters into a relationship with Julia, another person who is employed at the Ministry of Truth. Participating in a relationship is also illegal because having a relationship is considered a sign of promiscuity. As their relationship develops and there connection increases they think about joining the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is a secret organization whose goal is to overthrow Big Brother and stop oppression of ideas and freedom of speech.

The main antagonist of Winston in the Orwellian Society is The Party. The party is the government which is governed by the dictator, Big Brother. The dictator controls and watches over all of Oceania. He controls Oceania by controlling the four ministries of Love, Plenty, Peace and Truth. The Party regulates and controls life in Oceania. They are the ones who give out clothing, decide one social events and activities and distributes food. The party suppresses rebellion and continues to grow in power by banning individuality and freedom, the freedom of speech, though and the freedom of action. People or groups who disobey these rule or act against The Party by expressing ideas which do not harmonize with the ideas of The Party are severely punished. The citizens or people of Ocean feel oppressed and dictate but yet do nothing because they are scared and feel powerless. The Party has full control over them and they do not have a bit of freedom. They are monitored constantly through screens, cameras and microphones. Large massive posters are huge though Oceania with the sentence “Big Brother is watching” acting as a constant reminder to the citizens that each of these actions is being watched and that The Party has full control over them. The Big Brother uses the Thought Police, his military to stop any sign of rebellion by eliminating those citizens who are disloyal to the ideas of the dictator.

The Protagonist in this story is a teen age girl, Tessa. Tessa went to Victoria England to find her missing brother. When she gets there she gets kidnapped by two women. The two strange women took Tessa to a abandonment building. Now Tessa is trapped in a small, cold room.  Tessa is a tall girl. She has brown eyes and brown hair.  She is very brave and she takes risks. Once she even ran away from the building, even thou she was aware of the fact that if she left and didn't listen to the two women her brother would be killed.  She is also believes everyone that she meets. For example when she met the two strange women she believed that her brother knew them. Lastly Tessa is very smart. For example  she came up with variations of ways to save her and her brother from this unfortunate situation they are in.

There are two Antagonists in this book. There the two women that kidnapped Tessa. The two women are known as the Dark sisters. The Dark sisters aren't related, they are called sisters because they are business partners. The two women got the nickname Dark, because both of their surnames  have something to do  with dark. One's name is actually  Mrs.Dark, and the other one is called Mrs.Black, and together they are the Dark sisters. The book doesn't describe them, the only thing that is in this book related to their physical look  is that both of them had black hair and dark brown eyes. I know that Mrs.Dark is a better person, because she is the one who buy's Tessa two books a month. Both of the Dark sisters aren't patient at all. For example when they tell Tessa  to do something they don't give her time to do that task, and they pressure her the hole time. Lastly they are both mean. Even thou I said that Mrs.Dark is a better person, that doesn't mean that she is polite she just gives Tessa something to do the hole day. Both of them are mean firstly because they kidnapped Tessa and every time they see Tessa they black-male her so she does what they tell her. 

172 Hours on the Moon - Protagonist and Antagonist

I am reading a book called 172 hours on the Moon, and I am half way through. There are many different stories going all at once, these are the stories of the protagonists. They all have the same goal, which is to go to the moon through NASA's raffle. Except the ages of the characters is from 14 - 18 due to the raffles requirement. This is where the similarities end. The conflict of this book so far is man vs self. All protagonists are facing mental difficulties because they have a difficult life and are simply using this raffle as an opportunity to return back to normal or simply said using this opportunity as a therapy tool to step into fame and easiness away from the dark times they are in now. Another conflict that I think will occur is man vs supernatural. All blurbs of this book available are hinting towards some encounter with extra terrestrials or something supernatural. That is also who I think the protagonist is. An alien who will try it's level best to destroy the humans or intruders.
