Uglies

Uglies
Written by: Scott Westerfeld
Book has: 425 pages
Blog post for Sunday, February 2nd.

The protagonist in the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a girl called Tally. She is about to turn sixteen and is very excited about that. Mostly this is because she will finally turn pretty. In tally's point of view, once you turn sixteen, you turn from an ugly girl to a stunningly pretty one. By this time I think I have met Tally enough to say that she mostly always has her point of view, and is pretty determined in anything she does.I am not sure if she would change herself later. It seems like Tally is sometimes unsure and takes risks. Sometimes it seems like it takes her a longer amount of time to realize and determine what is she looking for, and what is the best choice for her. Once she has and choices a choice, she works really hard to sustain and keep it. Although I am reading the book, I am not so sure who is the antagonist in the story, not yet. The book is very exiting and I think that soon enough I will be able to find out the antagonist.

Uglies
Written by: Scott Westerfeld
Number of pages: 425

For my book report I have chosen a book called Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. Since I have started reading the book, I must say that it caught my attention because the writer has put lots of details and started the book pretty clearly, by letting me know  the setting and what is going on at that moment. The beginning of chapter is developing and happening in Pretty Town. Pretty town is a town that never sleeps, full of hyperactive parties and tons of pretties. All of the action and happening in the book at this time is present, meaning that it is happening now. Here is a very descriptive part from the book that I really like. "The scudding clouds did look a bit fishy, rippled into scales by a high- altitude wind. As the light faded, deep blue gaps of night peered through like an upside-down ocean, bottomless and cold." The book is very interesting and at the moment, I am reading more of it. :)

Delirium ♡

Delirium
by Lauren Oliver

For the book report I am reading a novel called Delirium. It is about a girl named Lena (short for Magdalena) who lives in a community where love is forbidden, and they refer to love as a disease called delirium. Lena had always stayed far away from boys and was very careful about what she did, as she was afraid of getting the disease, until she caught it. She fell in love with a boy named Alex about a month before she would receive her procedure (which would cure her and would prevent the delirium). After avoiding him for a while, Lena grew attracted to Alex, and they soon shared lots of happy memories together, as well as frightening ones. Towards the end of the book, Lena and Alex try to run away from the community, being followed by cops in cars and helicopters. In the end, Lena crosses the border and escapes the community, while Alex stays behind, sacrificing himself for Lena.
This book takes place in the United States. A certain year is not mentioned, but I know that it happens in the future.

The Ender's Game (Setting)

For Q3 book report, I am reading The Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
I chose this book because it is well known as a "bible" of science fiction.

The Ender's Game
by Orson Scott Card
(I don't have to book right now so I don't know the page numbers, but I've read about 5/6 of the book)

This story takes place in earth then it changes to the space. It is in the future, after they have fought the buggers and Ender is being prepared for another space war.

The Adoration of Jenna Fox

The Adoration of Jenna Fox

The setting of my book is in the house of Jenna Fox, in the book she forgets about her past so she has to watch some videos to try to remember the things she used to do before she was at the hospital. Because Im just at the beginning of the book the author didn't really describe everything. Basically she is trying to realize what she did before she went to the hospital, and she is trying to remember some words. Later she starts reading dictionaries, and watching movies from when she was small until the day that she was in a coma. Her parents are caring about her and they moved to another house away from the city so she can feel relaxed, but she thinks that there are more reasons then just that one.

Sorry for not answering completely the question, but Im just at the beginning of the book where they are trying to show how hard it is for her and how she is trying to remember some things.

Sorry for being 10 minutes late.

Gathering Blue #1

The book I am reading this quarter
is the second book from "The Giver Quartet" written by Lois Lowry. This book contains 241 pages and I read 23/241 pages (all together) this week.

I didn't read a lot this week but the first two chapters introduced a lot of characters and a couple of conflicts.

The book starts of with the main character, a girl named Kira, a girl with a twisted leg and her mother died just four days ago. At first, I was very confused because this book is supposed to be the second book of The Giver and it had nothing to do with The Giver at all. Kira lives in a village, (the name of the village and the "time" was not mentioned) where I personally think that people don't really care for each other. Just by reading two chapters, I can conclude that there is a very HUGE difference with the community that Kira lives in and where Jonas lives in. I already know that this is a science fiction because it is a dystopian book, just like The Giver. I can't really give examples yet because I am not that far in the book yet.

The novel I am reading is Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by J.K Rowling. One of the settings is in a house in a living room and Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry '' When Dudley had been put to bed he went into the living room in time to catch the last report on the evening news'' .  When Harry's parents died three professors from Hogwarts left Harry to Muggles. Muggles are people who are not wizards.
They didn't mention the time.

Johannes Cabal the Necromancer Post #1

This is the first blog post of the quater and I have finished a 337 page book called Johannes Cabal the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard.

The setting is a traveling carnival called The Cabal Brother's Traveling Carnival. It is a old rusty train at first but Mr. Bones and his crew make it look like it just came out of the factory. The carnival train stops at 20 stations.

The author describes some scientific principles but science it is a fantasy book they aren't described to well. One of the scientific principles is farther than light travel. Another one is flying.

Horst is Johannes brother and he is a vampire. He can move faster than the eye can see.
"Start being very careful now," he said urgently and blurred into the night. (Howard 226)
The train flow away from there last destination on midnight.
Leonine even had the impression, just before it vanished from sight, that it had lifted from the ground altogether and was travelling into the midnight sky like a great luminous eel from the ocean depth. (Howard 306)
I think the book was written more in a past setting so there are no future thing in it.

The Inheritance Cycle : Eragon #1 By Kresten Due

When we were given the choice between a fantasy novel or a sci-fi novel I considered my previous book recommendations and concluded when the name "Eragon" came to mind. "Eragon" is a book in the inheritance cycle series made by Christopher Paolini. I have already finished the book (730 of 730 pages) as it was so compelling I wasted away hours reading it. Continuing on, "Eragon" takes place in the mystical land of "Alageasia". The time period however is undefined though the time period has been considered the dark ages as most of "Alageasia" is ruled by a tyrant.  But where in "Alageasia" does the book take place. Well the book starts inside a Village named "Carvahall" which is rather small. However this small village is situated inside of a large valley known as "Palancar Valley". After a brief period of time the main character takes of and then goes to two larger trading cities known as "Dras Leona" and "Teirm". From here the main character crosses the "Hadarac Desert" and reachs the dwarven kingdom of "Farhen Dur". A quote proving the setting is "Chaos seems to rule Alageasia".

The Alchemist

Blog post #1, I am currently reading "The Alchemist" By: Paulo Coelho, I have read all 94/94 pages.

The setting in my book is constantly changing because the kid is traveling, he is a shepherd, and he is selling their wool to people that he meets in his journeys. The story takes place in the past, the date is not specified. I think that the author isn't specific enough about the scientific principles as much as he could but he did a decent job. There are a couple of people that read minds and a couple that read palms. some items that can be found in the 21st century are book, wine, knife, bread and sheep, and some things that could be found in the past are mind readers.

"'I didn't come to here to have you read my palm"' ( Paulo Coelho, pg:6)

Narnia The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

I am reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe from the Chronicles of Narnia written by C.S.Lewis and i read 19/189

The story starts in England but mostly happens in Narnia. It happens in the second world war but in Narnia  it  happens in the middle ages. Narnia is a fantasy book, I don't think the author wrote any scientific stuff but you never know.

Frankenstein #1

Tittle: Frankenstein w/ SAT vocabulary words+definitions
Author: Mary Shelley
Pages: 177/429

"Frankenstein" switches locations constantly. The story starts on a bout that is sailing along the northern ice. Later on in the story Victor Frankenstein (the protagonist) goes to college in Ganeva, then after a sudden turn of events finds himself back home in Ganeva, afterwards traveling to the Alps (throughout the rest of the story the locations keep changing). The exact time is not specified, though it happens in around the eighteenth century.

Quote:
" It was nearly noon when i arrived at the top of the scent. For some time I sat upon the rock that overlooks the sea of ice. A mist covered both that and the surrounding mountains. Presently, a breeze dissipated the cloud, and i descended upon the glacier. The surface is very uneven, rising like the waves of a troubled sea, descending low, and interspersed by rifts that sink deep. The field of ice is almost a league in width, but  i spent two hours crossing it. The opposite mountain is a bare perpendicular rock. From the side where I now stood Montavernt was exactly opposite, at the distance of a league; and above it rose Mount Blanc, in awful majesty. I remained in a recess of the rock, gazing on this wonderful and stupendous scene.

Enders game

Enders game
By: Orson Scott Card
# of pgs. 40/226

The book im reading is called Enders game and it's science fiction. Its about a boy that gets in a big fight at school and always fights with his brother. The people from battle school see the tests that he took to get into battle school. They come to his house and the first thing they talk to him about is the fight and why he did it. Then they ask him to come to battle school. Though it is a very though decision to make. He would have to leave his family though not that he loved them all only his sister Valentie and it means that he would have to leave her. His decision was soon final he wanted to go to battle school.  The setting of my novel is first in Enders community in North Carolina then in battle school for training for the army and being a soldier. This book takes place in the future. The quote that indicates what the setting is: "War games. All the boys are organized into armies. Day after day, in zero gravity, there are mock battles. Nobody gets hurt, but wining and losing matter. Everyone starts as a common soldier, takes orders."(pg. 17)

Hold Me Closer Necromacer

Hold Me Closer Necromancer
By Lish McBride
Pages 342
Read 342/342

The Book that I am reading for my book report is called Hold me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride. My Book takes place in modern day Seattle. A Quote from the book to prove it is "Music is a big thing in Seattle. We don't get heavy rain but we get it frequently, and there are some springs when you don't see dry skies in weeks." (Lish McBride 1797) The main character said that they were in Seattle and that it rained a lot which is a characteristic of Seattle.

Gathering Blue

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
This week I have read 106/215 pages. I think  the story happens in the future/  past because some of it happens before her parents died. Kira is a girl who has a twisted leg and no parents and which  I have  said before. She is trying to find shelter because their house is ruined. Also she has to gather some things for the council of Guardians and they show her to her  room in the quarters. Kira has a friend called Matt and his dog branch and they go to the forest. Matt and Kira get there a lady called Annabella teaches Kira how to dye all the colors except for blue. She has to come everyday and learn all of this stuff. She and Thomas  have to help Matt because he is trying to hunt and he is too young to do it.

I really like the book and I hope you all enjoyed it too!

Mocking Jay Post #1

Blog Post #1 of Semester 2

Mocking jay

Suzanne Collins

My book is the continuation of the Hunger Games and Catching Fire. This book is the answer to all the question. It is the final pieces of the puzzle. When Katniss escaped the arena from Catching Fire, as  most of you know Peeta was left behind. Instead of taking Katniss to district 12 the took her to district 13, which originally disintegrated due to a mining accident. But they rebuilt district 13. At 13 they had survivors from the bombing in district 12 and people from district 13. The book talks about how she and Finnick are adjusting to their new home. Every now and then they get broadcasts from the Capitol with Peeta in them. First he looked fine, but after 3 broadcasts you could see bruises and marks. Peeta surprised all of Panem by warning district 13 that the Capitol is going to bomb them, but he got a beating after that. The Capitol indeed did bomb them but they were prepared. The rescued Peeta and other prisoners but Peeta was injected with some thing that made him hate Katniss and try to kill her. Brave people who live currently in district 13, are preparing a plot to kill President Snow and take over the capitol.

Setting: The setting is in Panem and they never really tell the year but I know that it is in the future.

My book is not a scientific story but it is more of a fantasy. But I guess there is some science into it. For example: the head of the security has a watch that is a walky-talky, a watch, a Gps and has other gadgets. I guess that is considered science.

Present item: A gun

Future item: A sledge hammer that is like the one from Thor. Finnick gets it from Beetee.

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan (post 1)

Blog Post #1, The Sea of Monsters, Rick Riordan,48/ 279.

Setting (time and place):Yes, the kids at camp at blood have special powers and abilities which is obviously fictional, but some kids have skills, rather than powers, which other people on earth nowadays could possibly have. people have ability that only science could solve, such as potions of healing, and people regaining limbs after fractured or broken off.

Ender’s Game #1

I am reading a science-fiction book called “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card and so far I read 100/396 pages.

The story takes place first on planet Earth, and later in a special space station that is located far out in space. The setting of the story is in the future. The author accurately describes some scientific principles. He also writes about some things that are still impossible for humans to do today.

A good description of a scientific principle which we understand today is the propulsion of the space shuttle.  Space shuttle is one of the scientific discoveries known today.  In the book, and therefore in the future, it is used to reach the space station. The same principle is used in the present day in order to reach the International Space Station.  The motors of the space shuttle make use of many kinds of scientific principles. Some of these principles allow the space shuttle to fly straight when it is in space.  Flying straight is not so complicated in the atmosphere because air helps the spacecraft.  But in space, there is no air and it is very easy for the spacecraft to spin in many directions.

But, I also don’t agree that the author describes some scientific principles well. For example, on a space station today you would normally float.  However, in the book, the people who are on the space station, walk and live like if they were on planet Earth. It is known that on a starship or on a space station there is no gravity.  Apparently, people of the future have found out ways to manipulate gravity, but I think that this should have been better explained in the book.  I had to do additional research in order to understand how to generate gravity.

The space station, which the author in the book calls battle school, is a special school where the brightest kids from Earth are taught to be military commanders. Ender is the main character in this book and he is one of the kids that goes to this school.

“They say that weightlessness can cause disorientation, especially in children, whose sense of direction isn’t yet secure. But Ender was disoriented before he left Earth’s gravity. Before the shuttle launch even began.” (Orson Scott Card page 56)

Divergent Post 1#

Since I have finished reading Divergent over the winter break so I will divide book into 4 parts for every blog post so here is the first quarter of the book. Beatrice ( the main character ) firstly talks about how Beatrice lived her life in the Abnegation community ( 1 out of 4 ) the others being : Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, and Candor. She's flipping back her memories because its the day where she gets picked for which community she will be put in. Her and her brother Caleb go meet up at the school where all the other people their age will be, as she goes up the piles of stairs she's always fascinated to see the Dauntless in action ; strong, risk-taking, they get around the city by jumping off of trains and buildings. As they arrive there, everyone has to take a test, no one knew how it was going to be like but Beatrice was very nervous about it. As they called her up she went into the testing room where the walls were mirrors and there was a lady that was dressed all up in black, with black curly hair, and tattoos all over her body, soon after she found out that her name was Tori.
She asked her a few questions and then told her to drink something out of the cup, soon after Beatrice found herself on the floor and there was a growling dog approaching her she had no idea what to do next but instead the dog is kind and licks her face, next appears a baby in the middle of the room and she starts laughing and this time Beatrice could feel that the way the dog ran towards the baby is not a great sign so she jumped onto the dog and next thing she knows she finds herself back in the testing room. Tori reveals to her that she's Divergent. And she isn't allowed to tell anyone, at all. Divergent is when you're all  of Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless, tomorrow is the Choosing Ceremony so they will reveal which ever faction she will be put in. The next day everyone gets their assigned faction and go live there forever, Caleb surprisingly got Erudite ( because the Abnegation and Erudite accused each other of so many things and they hate one another ).
They all leave with their faction for the Dauntless they have to jump onto a moving train to get to the Dauntless compound she then meets a new friend Christina along the way, then they all jump off and suddenly everyone stops, there is one more thing too do, and this is the first time, but jump off a real roof of a building. No one goes first its so frighting for everyone, she eyes some people arguing, two of them eyed her back but in a very mean way she later finds out that there names are Molly and Peter. Beatrice is so risk taking and jumps off first not knowing whats on the bottom, before she knows it she lands on a trampoline type thing, a man helps her out and says he's Four and asks for her name ; she says Beatrice but he said that its a new place, new start so she called herself Tris. Four shows them around and when they all sit down for lunch Eric the leader introduces himself, from her thoughts to everyone's faces she thought that he was creepy. She then meets two other friends Al and Will, tomorrow they will start to practice fighting, Christina up against Molly and Will against Al, then the next day she sees them fightning. Will beat up Al but it wasn't that bad but when Christina and Molly had the battle it was a close one, Christina was so tired that she was done, Eric did not accept this at all so he threatened her and then nearly made her fall off the building in real life.

Allegiant Post #1

Blog Post #1

The setting of my Novel is in a City composed of 5 factions, each of them resembling a different trait of humanity. The five factions are:

Erudite - meaning knowledgeable

Amity - meaning peaceful

Candor - meaning honesty

Abnegation - meaning selflessness

Dauntless - meaning brave

When a child turns sixteen in the society, they have to choose a faction, according to a test that they take to help them recognize where they belong. Most citizens of this dystopian community have only one faction choice, but there are also some exceptions. The people that get multiple faction results are called 'Divergent'. This means they do not belong in only one faction, but in multiple ones. This is a problem for the society because they are trying to organize a place where everyone fits perfectly in only one place.

The scientific features of this society that have been  featured in the previous books in the trilogy are the serums that the people use. The society has five serums - one for each faction:

Erudite - death serum

Amity - peace serum

Candor - truth serum

Dauntless - simulation serum

Abnegation - memory serum

This is the scientific setting that I found in the novel. The novel's author describes a very science based society, and these serums can be found as an everyday tool in the future, just like they are an everyday tool in the novel.

Science in action quote: "The fluid is packed with microcomputers. They are designed to detect specific genetic markers and transmit the data to a computer." (Roth 170)

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
This week I have read a new book called Gathering Blue which is the second book of The Giver . This week I have read 86/ 215 pages.
The setting takes place in a village and the story happens in the future / past
The book is about a girl called Kira who has a twisted leg and she has no mother or father.   She tries to  find shelter because their house is ruined and the neighbors don't like her at all.  Then she makes friends with a boy called Matt and his dog Branch. Kira is judged by the Council of Guardians  and she has to gather things and then they take her to the quarters and they give her a place to stay. Matt and Kira goes  to the forest together and a lady called Annabella teaches Kira how to dye all of the  colors except for blue.

I really like the book and  I hope you will like the book too!
