Hello!
So for our class started reading groups very recently and got a book to read and write blog posts about. For my group, the book chosen is "A Pickpocket's Tale". This book seems very interesting already even though I haven't read that much yet.
A Pickpocket's Tale" by Karen Schwabach is a novel that describes the struggles of living in the 1730's. Not just as a regular person as you may have thought, but as a thief. A 10 year old female thief. Molly Abraham has just been sentenced for stealing, and was ordered to leave to America by the court of London. Of course, like any other child, she didn't want to leave London and hoped to escape the ship. But what was making it harder for Molly is that she is an orphan, having no education at all either.
On the ship, Molly meets a nice woman named Mrs. Wilkes who helps her get through the ride and passes Hesper who she's already known. During the ride, Molly gets her shoes stolen by Hesper and not to mention has to sleep on piled of dead insects. When she thinks it cant get any worse than this, Molly gets sold to a Jewish man named Mr. Bell. He thinks of his doing as a favor to Molly but she is in great suffering.
When Molly comes to his house, there is many to greet her. There was Mrs. Bell, also known as Mr. Bell's wife. Arabella and Rachel, Arabella is a slave in the house for being born in that skin as Rachel, is just a young toddler. Adah, an old and negative woman and lastly David, who is the son of Mr and Mrs. Bell.
Molly is having a very hard time adjusting to this new family and helping them out with the water as a slave. But the Bells are treating her very well, she is just not used to it. They dressed her in fancy clothes and gave her a bath, but she was so surprised and not used to the new things, she thought they were trying to kill her. Because of this terrible thought, during dinner Molly surprisingly grabbed a knife from the table threatening to stab somebody!
