THE SETTING
The protagonist(Homer Winthrop) goes on an unexpected trip to Maine and that is the place where this story takes place at. There is no exact year or date of the occurring events in the book but we can tell that the story takes place in the present or recent past.
THE CONFLICTS
In my eyes there are 2 types of conflicts in this book. One of them being Man v.s. Man and the other being Man v.s. Mystery meaning that this story has external conflicts. This book talks about the mystery of Homer Winthrop's dad and how Homer tries to find out what is the true story behind his dad's death. Even though he tried hard to "decode" the past, he didn't find anything out yet. The one preventing him from finding out the truth is, in fact, his mother who has the keys to all the answers. Homer is trying everything to get the answers out of his mother but he is still unsuccessful. I felt tension every single time when Homer talked to his mother regarding his dad's bereavement. It was a battle between the two every time that they spoke with each other. Its an ongoing conflict. We will see, if his mom opens up and talks to him face to face about the issue. Will that lead to another sign that Homer can use to solve the puzzle?
