Title: That was Then, This is Now
Author: S.E Hinton
I chose this book, because it was written by S.E Hinton, the same author that wrote the book The Outsiders. I really enjoyed reading the outsiders and discussing it, and I thought that any S.E Hinton would have the same style in each book she wrote, and I was right. This book is about 16 year old boys, who loved to fight, but the time it took place in was after the Ponyboy's adventure in the Outsiders happened. There were no gangs really for the main characters, even though the Socs did still exist and there were the greasers, however the Socs tried to look poor as ever so they didn't look so rich, and the greasers didn't comb there hair back, but had long streaks of hair over their faces. Ponyboy Curtis is in this book too, however he doesn't have an important role. Tim Shepard is also there, but there were only a few characters I recognised from the Outsiders. The main characters are Bryon and Mark. Like Ponyboy in the Outsiders Bryon tells the story, while Mark is his adopted brother and best mate. Mark has a very important role in the story, and without him, the book wouldn't be called That was Then, This is Now. Mark was adopted by Bryon's mother when they were both small. Bryon was more than overjoyed that he had a buddy he could play with. Mark's parents were fighting a lot, and they killed each other while they were fighting, and Bryon's mum was happy enough to take him. They were brother, best buddies and inseparable. They went everywhere together, and of course they loved each other. But that was when they were small, less then 11 years old. Now they were 16. Mark was younger than Bryan, and he was a friendly chap. He always broke the law, stole other people's cars and rode them without keys. He was very good stealing, but he was still a very nice guy. I don't like Bryan at all though. He was the main character, but not nice at all. He didn't steal like Mark though, but he was a tough guy, he was strict and he had a dirty language. He smoked and drank and I tell you I don't like him at all!!! Since Bryan was getting older, he started dating girls, he was in love, and he was searching for a job. His family didn't have money, and he needed it badly. He was slowly growing apart from Mark, but Mark held on. Bryon already had a girlfriend he gave upon because she really liked Ponyboy, but he paid no attention to her. Bryon found another girl, Cathy, his friend's, M&M's
sister. He loved her, but Mark didn't like her that much. Bryon was in love, and he was dating, he was working, he was so busy that he forgot bout Mark, his best buddy.
One day, M&M disappeared. Cathy was worried, he was her brother, and he was only 13, and Bryan did everything he could help. It was Mark who found M&M, it was Mark who showed them where he found him, and it was Mark who helped him get into the hospital. M&M ran away because he had been taking too many drugs, so he lost his common-sense, and he would never get it back. Bryan was sad, sad for Cathy whom he loved so much. He never thought of Mark, that he was leaving his buddy behind. He had saved from many fights, but also caused him a lot of trouble. When Bryan longed for a cigarette one day, he remembered that Mark hid them under his mattress, and he dug there only to find a tube with drugs inside. Bryan, that fool was drunk that night, and he thought what these drugs meant. Mark certainly wasn't taking them, he was selling them. This meant that it could've meant that it was Mark's fault that M&M lost his mind, that Cathy was upset. Bryan didn't know what he was doing he just called the cops. He was actually going to imprison his brother, his best mate, his dearest friend. This is what drinking usually does. It lets you do anything, which includes sending your mates to prison. But he was doing this for Cathy. Mark was sent to prison, sad and surprised. You can imagine how hurt and betrayed he felt. Bryan, without thinking had lost his brother, who would have done anything for him, who would have stopped if he had been asked. But Bryan didn't think so he caused so much trouble for a girlfriend he lost the very next day, and who decided to be wit Ponyboy instead. Bryan afterwards couldn't believe what he did. He tried to get Mark out of prison after that, but after being betrayed, Mark hated him.
These are the lines book that I found pretty heartbreaking:
"How goes it?" I managed finally. "What's the action like in here?"
" If I told you how it was in here," he said (Mark) "You'd be sick.
There was silence. Then he continued. "I didn't have to see you. I wanted to though. I had to make sure."
"Make sure of what?"
" Make sure I hated you."
This line here was said by Mark and not only was it heartbreaking to Bryan, but also to me.
"We were like brothers," I said desperate." You were my best friend-"
He laughed then, and his eyes were the golden, hard flat of a jungle animal. "Like a friend said to me, 'That was then, and this is now'.
This book makes me sick and sad. Just to think that Bryan betrayed his best friend like that because he was drunk, poor Mark, his own parents got killed when they were drunk, and now his own brother and best friend. Yes it's a heart-breaking story with a sudden ending, and I wish it would go on, to say that Mark was freed and he and Bryan were brothers again. But no there is an ending, and it won't go on, unfortunately. If you asked me which book I would prefer from the Outsiders or That was The This is Now, I would say the Outsiders. This book I read ended too quickly and in a heart-breaking way. But this has a lesson: NEVER GET DRUNK!!!
