My Life With the Chimpanzees

Book: My Life With the Chimpanzees
Author: Jane Goodall
Pages Read: 139/156

The book I am reading is about Jane Goodall and how she pursues her dream to become an ethologist. She was born in England, where she grew up. She then moved to France but she only lived there for a few months because of the war. (World War 2.) She grew up and when she was twenty six years old she finally got the chance to go to Africa and study animals. She had always dreamed of going to Africa and study all kinds of exotic animals. She worked as a secretary for a man called Louis Leakey, but after a while of working with only dead animals, (He was an anthropologist) he let Jane be the leader for a new project based on studying chimpanzees. She lived out in the woods for four months, studying chimpanzees with her mother, and later she went to get a Ph. D in England. She hated being away from the chimpanzees; she had learned to love them all. When she came back she married Hugo van Lawick, and later she got a son called Grub. She continued to study Chimpanzees.
"Louis, skilled in bush lore, followed the leopard's tracks and we found the body of the huge dog." (Goodall 44
I actually could not find a definition for bush lore, but I did find the definition of bush man where it mentions bush lore.

A Child Called "It"

Author: Dave Pelzer

Number: 23/174

A Child Called "It" is about a small boy that has to do all his work so his mom wouldn't beat him up. Also, if he does all the work he is required to do, he gets to eat a little bit. This book is realistic, but it is very sad already from the beginning, because a fifth grader is having a really hard time with his mother, that is requiring a lot from him. I understood how he felt, but i could never imagine my parents, or my friends parents acting like his. I selected this text because I wanted to see how bad a family could be, and that I should be happy with my parents, and so should all the other people in this school, or anywhere else.

"Mom was an absolute clean fiend." (Pelzer 19).
Fiend - evil spirit, devil..
The Motorcycle Diaries
Ernesto "Che" Guevara
45/175

My book is about the journey to America that Che and his friend Alberto Garando set out to. It is about their downsides and up sides. My book is very realistic. But there are some parts that seem unrealistic. For example: How are they able to pay for many hotels even though they got layed off? That is the whole reason they are going to USA, to get a better life. I selected this book because it just appealed to me. I think it would be beneficial to know about him because I am half Hispanic.

"Our hands and our pants were unequivocal proof that we were safe with Galvez, at least with the question on wire" (Guevara, 40)

The Teens Guide to World domination

I have read 20 pages of my new book.

This book so far is AWESOME. Its funny, its motivational and its even a little heart felt. This book is so far about a teen who already has a carrier. Not for sports, video games, teaching but for talking. You heard me talking. He says he wrote the book not to show people that he's perfect which he's not but to show people that he's gone through the trouble of what we as middle schoolers are going through. To help and to make it better. It's not like a psychologist. It like a regular person just helping people go through this. the final thing i need to add to this is that this book is AWESOME.

Swimming To Antarctica

I'm reading a non-fiction book called " Swimming to Antarctica " by Lynne Cox, as I was reading the book some of the characters in the book referred to the main character as Lynne so it might as well be an autobiography. When I heard this book being picked out in the library it sounded nice because this is a true story about a swimmer, just like me, the book seemed a little long but I'm going to give it a try ! So far as I'm reading the book its about Lynne and she talks about her whole life, all important times, and her feelings. She lived in New Hampshire all her life, and always had swim practice, they would swim first and then do calisthenics, but Lynne was different she just wanted to swim all the time, whether storm or not.
Her family decides to move from New Hampshire to California they didn't want to but Lynne didn't mind, her parents loved to see her swim, and they were moving to the same area as the Belmont Plaza ( where the Olympics of 1968 were held ). Before they left her fellow swim-mates parents, coach, and friends said that she will swim the English Channel, and that was her dream from there on and to get better and better at swimming. Ever since they moved there Lynne didn't like anything much besides swimming, she disliked school because they did everything without permission and the weather there was not like anything similar to the weather in New Hampshire, she missed New Hampshire more than she thought. With all that going on swimming was going great, she loved her new Coach Gambril ( he was a big professional retired football player ) he was kind, nice, and truly believed in people, also in their swim team they had Hans Klein and Gunnar Larsson two very excellent and all-time winning swimmers. That's so far to where I got to the book, its interesting and I think it'll get more and more as I go through the book.

The picture below is the actual Belmont Plaza Swimming Pool that still stands in Long Beach, CA, USA

Chinese Cinderella #1

The nonfiction book that I chose to read for the second quarter is called Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah. This book contains 205 pages and I read 21/205 pages (all together) this week.

Have you ever read Cinderella? If you did , this book is the Chinese version of it (no, it is not the original Cinderella translated into Chinese). This book is basically about a Chinese girl, Adeline Yen Mah and about her life. This book is similar like Cinderella so I knew right away that there was going to be a stepmother and mean siblings.

In the first couple of chapters, Adeline introduces her and her family. It also explains about her real mother and how she died. The book stars of her as a four year old who goes to kindergarten and earns a silver medal that came along with a certificate. It was an award for the best student. She lives with her Aunt Baba, Nei Nei (grandmother), Ye Ye (grandfather), her father, her stepmother, her older sister, her younger stepsister, three brothers, and one younger stepbrother. So all together, Adeline has six siblings, seven, including her. It was very exciting at first, until I found out that Adeline's father, her stepmother, and her younger stepbrother disappeared for one year. Another bad news is that Adeline's Nei Nei died from a massive stroke when she was soaking her feet in water. Nei Nei soaks her feet in water because when she was young, there is a custom in China called "Foot Binding". Chinese women bounded their feet because they believed that it was pretty having small feet. It is really painful to have feet like that.

Here are some pictures on foot binding:

Maus

Maus
by Art Spiegelman
This week I have read 15/ 159 pages.

My book is a cartoon and I only read the first chapter. In the first chapter a men and a woman  maus spend some time together and they love each other  and then  they meet another girl maus called Anya. While the three of them have a wonderful time together a men and a woman maus go out for dinner because they get invited. I think the book is really good because it is very easy  to understand the story. The zylberberg family was very well off- millionaires said the girl maus on page 18 Art spiegelman. Millionaires means that you are a very rich person.

I hope you like the book too!

Candy Freak

The book that i am reading is called "Candy Freak" and it is by: Steve Almond. So far i have read 20/261 pages and i am pretty suprised with how much the book has expained so far.
My book is about a kid who has a problem with candy. He would always buy the candy but not eat it, he would instead play with it on his bed, and strum his fingers through it. He actualy oonce did nt have money on him so he robbed the store and got sme candy and as soon as his father found out he made him return the money instead of the candy and apologize. I think that the "Candy Freak" is realistic fiction becasue who would rob a store for 3 pieces of candy?

THE ART OF NOON-CONFORMITY

The book I'm reading is called, The Art of Non-Conformity, by Chris Guillebeau. so far I've read 20 pages.

So far, throughout the 20 pages that I've read, I've been able to figure out that the author, Chris Guillebeau, is trying to convince people that they can have a better life by saying that you should "set your own rules" "live the life you want" and "change the world". through out the book hes been saying that the "night walkers" in life are the people who act as their friends expect them to and are don't want to be different. what Chris is wanting people to think about is being yourself. he says that being different isn't bad and how it can help you differ from others and live the life you wish to, not what other people want from you.

One word that i had no idea what it mean was "connoisseurs" "I found a good deal for Jamaican coffee-I could sell it for $17 to connoisseurs in the Untied States-so I started receiving 50-pound sacks of beans at my apartment every week(Guillebeau 12). the word means: "a person who is especially competent to pass critical judgments in an artparticularly one of the fine arts, or in matters of taste" (dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/connoisseurs?s=t )

Edith's story by Edith Velmans: The true story of a young girl's courage and survival during world war II

Edith's story is by Edith Velmans, it is an autobiography but was written by Edith when she was much older. I have read 36/238 pages.

So far the story is about the Germans invading the Netherlands. In the beginning it is about her life before the war and I am up to the part where Germany invaded the Netherlands. Edith talks about some interesting things that happened but does not say what happened everyday. Knowing somethings about wars and the Nazis the book seems realistic. I chose this text because I wanted to read some diary on World War II and this is what I found. So far it is interesting.

"Yesterday was the Day of Atonement"(Velmans 35)
Day of Atonement = a day when you try to make good for the bad things you have done.

Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod - Post #1

Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod
Gary Paulsen
38/256

The book that I had selected to read for the non fiction book report is Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod. I selected this book because I do not really like non fiction and biographies, although this book seemed a bit more interesting than other non fiction books since it would have a more interesting plot that evolves around action.

Currently, in the pages that I have read, this novel is about a man who participates in dogsled races. The man has a crew of fifteen dogs, eight of which are "problem dogs", which means they have some behavior problems. The "problem dogs" and the man go practicing one evening, and there was a large storm outside, so the man fell off the sled and  the sled almost tipped off the mountain onto a gigantic canyon. By luck, the man and dog get saved and continue sled racing for now.

Finally, a word I did not know at the beginning was actually a word that was included in the title itself - Iditarod. This word means an important dog sled race run on the Iditarod Trail (google). This word is used in the title of the novel.

The Last Lecture 2

The Last Lecture
Randy Pausch
112/206

I am reading "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch as a non fiction book for Quarter 2 book report. I am so glad that I chose this book to read because I find it as a great inspiration that teaches you so much about life.

Randy Pausch is a professor who is asked to give The Last Lecture just like lots of other professors. But he is special, because this is his last lecture. He is declared a terminal cancer where he has only months to live left. He gave this lecture for his young three children to teach them after he has passed away. He focuses on how to achieve your childhood dreams along with some of his stories and experiences.

One word I didn't know which I looked up was "delegate" it means to send or appoint a person as representative: Delegate. As a professor, I learned early on that I could trust bright, nineteen-year-old students with the keys to my kingdom, and most of the time, they were responsible and impressive. It's never too early to delegate. (p. 110)

Randy Pausch gives the last lecture again on the show.

Steve Jobs #1

IsaacsonFor my non fiction book that I wished to read I had to make a very difficult decision. Which biography to choose, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates. I ended up choosing to read the bibliography of Steve Jobs, as Bill gates isn't dead yet. So I began the long journey of reading this 598 page book by Walter . So far I have read 40 pages as I only started reading today, but it is quite interesting. So far, it has been about his parents, and in general his childhood (Did you know he set an explosive off as a prank under his teachers chair?). In these 40 pages that I have read so far here was a single word I didn't know germanium. After a bit of research I found out that germanium is in fact an element on the periodic table of elements with an atomic number of 32. It is hard, solid, and gray. It was also named after the country Germany. This word was used in the sentence, "He was going to produce wires in germanium because it was cheaper than silicon.

"127 hours Between a Rock and a Hard Place" #1
I started reading the non-fiction book called “127 Hours Between a Rock and a Hard Place” by Aron Ralston. So far I read 35/342 pages.

The main character in this story is Aron Ralston (the author). He loves hiking and taking videos and pictures of where he has been.  That time he decided to go hiking and see what the canyons of Colorado were like. He wanted to see the petroglyphs in the canyon called “Great Gallery”. As he went through the “Blue John Canyon” he met an obstacle; he had to descend several meters. He tied a rope around a big rock and started descending. The rock started moving towards the edge, though, and fell on Arons’s arm. He started cursing and panicking. After 10 minutes of cursing, he cooled down and started thinking about how he could move the giant rock so that he could free his hand.

The book seems realistic because it happened to the author. I chose this text because I like survival stories.

A word that I didn’t know was “ephemeral”.

Sentence:

“Although it’s ephemeral, the general well-being that accompanies such a moment will boost my temperament for hours or even days.” (Ralston 17pg)

Ephemeral means something that lasts for a small amount of time.

We are the Weather Makers

For this book report i chose the book We are the Weather Makers. This book is about science behind global worming and so far i have read 43 pages of it and it tells about how worldwide reaction on global worming.

Miles To Go

The autobiography I chose for this next book project is Miles To Go by Miley Cyrus. In the first few chapters I have read this week was about how she spent her childhood. Its how she struggles and gets stuck in some situations in her 6th grade, and how Miley and er family had to move to another country. One unknown word I didn't know what it meant was Quirky. '' I wanted to feel unique, quirky different. According to a dictionary it means something that is strange, not normal but cool.

The Diary of Anne Frank

Anne Frank The diary of  young girl.
with an introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt

For the new book report I choose a bibliography of Anne Frank. This book is about the girls life and what happened with her, how she felt. In this book she wrote everything that was going on with her life. This bibliography or really diary reminds people of the horrors of war that people had to deal with in that time.
This week I read 45 pages and it seems like an interesting book. The word that I didn't really understand is confide. The sentence goes like this:I hope" I shall be able to confide in you completely, as I have never been able to do in anyone before, and I hope that you will be a great support and comfort for me." Anne Frank.
The word confide means: to tell someone about a secret or private matter while trusting them not to repeat it to others.

Black Beauty

By Anna Sewell

I read 20 pages out of 262 pages. This week I am reading a book called "Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell which is a real life story. As far as I know it is about a young horse called blacky that lives with his owner Squire Gordon and his mother Duchess. One day the owner thinks that he is old enough to start putting him the saddle, a bridle, a collar, a crupper, a breaching, a halter, a headstall, a bit and the iron shoes. At first Blacky felt very weird and a bit painful but afterwards he got used to it. Later on Blacky gets moved into another owner, the owner decides to call him Black beauty because he looks really great and he is black. In the new place he meets a horse called ginger. Ginger tells black beauty about his life and all he has been trough, Black beauty feels really sad for Ginger because Ginger has told him a lot of painful and struggling adventures. Un unknown word that I have not understood is the world Tempers. It means To cause something such as steel or glass to become hard or strong by heating it and cooling it.I found this world on page 57 paragraph 2.

My Steve

By: Terri Irwin, Read 40 pgs
The book that i chose is My Steve. It talks about the life of two people that fall in love one is Steve and the other is Terri Steves life. The main thing that it is talking about is Terrie's life before and after she met Steves. Right now it's talking about all the troubles she is having and how it is like a mini zoo at her house. She really has complicated situations with animals in her back yard she just can't make them happy. Knowing that Steve died and so his wife is writing this book must of been hard to remember what happened in the way back.

NBA Comparisons

While both articles show and compare how good NBA teams are (individually, and against each other). One of the articles compares how good the teams are against each other, while the other one shows how good each team is talent wise. Both articles contain similar information, showing that the Philadelphia 76ers are the least talented team in the NBA, and the the Miami Heat are the most talented and have the greatest odds of winning the championship.

Let's England

This week I read part of the book, "Let's England" By Colin Joyce. This week I read 78 pages of the book. The main Idea, and concept of this book is very interesting. It is to describe, and talk about things in a biased perspective. Specifically an Englishman's perspective on multiple different subjects like the weather, or housing. But when Colin Joyce is talking about these matters, he adds a very humorous perspective. For example, when he was talking about an Englishman's dinner, he talked about what to do if the next person around the table didn't pass the port. Apparently you are meant to say "Have you met the Bishop of Norwich?" apparently this is code for pass the port, but what made it very funny was when he added the next part, which was, "What happens if they don't get the hint?". Well then apparently one must say, Wonderful fellow, but he always forgets to pass the port. This week the one word that I didn't know was "Port". Apparently port is a class of very sweet wines.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Title: The Help
Author: Kathryn Stockett
Pages: 155/444

This week I read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. This book is set in Mississippi in 1962. It is told through three first-point perspectives: Skeeter, a tall girl with frizzy blonde hair who dreams of becoming a journalist, Aibileen, a middle aged woman who has made a living raising other people's children, and Minny, an outspoken and talented cook. Skeeter has just returned home from university to her family's house on their cotton plantation. Skeeter gets a job at the Jackson Journal writing a housekeeping column but since she has no experience in the area, she seeks out advice from Aibileen, her friend's maid. Aibileen is very happy to answer Skeeter's questions and they end up spending quite a bit of time together. One night, the topic of Aibileen's deceased son comes up. She mentions how he wanted to write a book from the help's point of view. Skeeter decides to use this idea as she had been searching for inspiration to write a book. Skeeter collects many stories from Aibileen and writes a 31 page preview to send to a publisher to see if they show interest. The next character, Minny, is left without a job after her elderly employer goes to live in a retirement home. She quickly finds a new job as a maid to, Celia, a strange woman who has just moved to the town. She hired Minny without her husband knowing and tries to pass off Minny's cooking as her own. She also spends a lot of time in her room and walking around upstairs in the children's rooms. And she has no children.

The Last Lecture

I read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch this week. I am on the fourth chapter of this book. This book is non-fiction. The main idea of this book is the author, Randy Pausch has been asked for a talk called "The Last Lecture". The one that a lot of professors do. Randy Pausch, a computer Science professor was asked for him to give "The Last Lecture". The thing was that it would actually be his last lecture. He has been diagnosed with terminal cancer recently. He has about two to five months of health left. Randy had three young children. Even though every moment was important to him and his family, he really wanted to give the talk. With a difficult agreement from his wife, he starts "The Last Lecture" titled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams". 'Many people might expect the talk to be about dying. But it had to be about living.' -p.9

Randy Pausch giving the talk "The Last Lecture"

All American Girl

The book I was reading this week was All American Girl by Meg Cabot and I have read 31 pages. The Main idea of this book is about three sisters that dont get along. The sister that is not the oldest but neither the youngest she is jealous of her older sister because she is the most popular girl in school, she has a very artistic and creative boyfriend and she gets along with their mom and dad very well expect the guy that she is dating (Jack). The word I didn't know was anti- authoritarianism so I looked it up in a dictionary and it said that it means opposed to authoritarian government. I think that this book is very interesting because these two sisters three but the third one isn't really jealous of anybody so it's weird because I have a older sister but were not jealous of each other guaranteed but maybe it will help us solve some of our problems  because we always fight (in a good way).

WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS

The novel I chose to read this week is called "Where The Red Fern Grows". I chose this book because I remembered that I really liked it in fourth grade so I decided to read it again. The main character of the novel is called Billy. Billy has always wanted two hounds. He finally gets enough money to by two hounds. When they arrive in a nearby town he decides to go and get them. Everybody is laughing at bill because of the way he looks like.

Black Beauty

 Black Beauty

By Anna Sewell

This week I read 20 pages out of 262. This week I am reading a book called Black Beauty. I read so far that the book is about a young colt that grows up with his mother and his nice and respectful trainer in a barn. When the colt is grown up they learn him how to put on the saddle,a bridle, a collar, a crupper, a breaching, a halter, a headstall, a bit and the iron shoes and his owner started to ride on his back. Blacky felt weird and un normal at first but then he got used to it. A while after a new owner bought blacky and had to say goodbye to his owner. When he came to the new place in birtwick park he got in his new place, a new barn. When he got in his new barn he liked it because he was loose, had an airy room and had a companion called  merrylegs which people say that he bites and/or kick. A word that I have noticed that I don't understand and it is new for me is  the word halter which means"A rope or Canvas headgear for a horse, usually for leading". I got the meaning from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/halter

fruits basket

This week I have been reading the manga my favorite anime since the manga is a little different. It is about a girl, Tohru Honda, who lives in a tent and the "prince" of her school, Yuki Souma, sees her and takes her to live in his house with his cousin,Shigure. Later she meets Kyo,and finds out Yuki and him hate each other. Tohru helps fix that little by little, especially when she finds out that there family is cursed. The curse is when ever a member of the opposite gender hugs them or they go under a lot of stress certain people in the Souma family turn into the 12 animals*of the Chinese zodiac and the cat from the Chinese folk tale*.

What am I reading now?

What am I reading now?
At the moment I am reading a book on Serbian. It is called Dizi and it is written by Keti Kesidi.
It is a awesome book and I really like it. Every week I have to read a book in Serbian and write a whole project about it. This way I could have a better and stronger vocabulary in Serbian. The book is pretty interesting, but I am only on the 50th page, so I am not sure yet, how it will finish. At the moment it is getting my attention, and is full of interesting ideas.

Sonia - Twilight

Twilight

I recently began reading the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and I like it very much. It has 434 pages and I have read 285 pages out of 434. The main character is called Isabella Swan, but she likes being called Bella. When she moves to a small town called Forks to live with her dad, she falls in love with this guy at her new school called Edward Cullen. Edward acted very weirdly to her in the first few weeks, but then started to become very friendly. Bella always wondered why Edward acted so weirdly around her, and she keeps trying to find out. Later on, Edward reveals his secret; he is a vampire. After a while of being friends, Bella and Edward start to date.

I really like this book already and want to thank Anna for making me read it : )

The House of Hades
By Rick Riordan

A new word in The House of Hades is foremast. foremast means the mast closest to the bow of the ship.

Troy (The Novel)

Tittle: Troy

The whole story is set in about the time of ancient Greece. Its about the war between Troy and Greece, caused by the marriage of Paris (a Troy-an Prince) and Helen (Kings of Greece wife, the most beautiful woman in the world). The story itself is told through 3 people and 1 group of old ladies, this actually lets the reader understand more of whats happening and how people are describing the drama (rumors, gossip), since every person/group are working in different palaces.  The story both includes love, war, dishonesty, belief. I like this novel, since its well written and talks about something that actually happened.
