The main character of the book is David and his mother (her name is not included). David is a small boy and his mother is hitting him, and she is torturing him. He is searching for food, because his mother doesn't want to give him any, so he comes up with a way of stealing it from the kids in school because he is really hungry. 

"Soon after I had begun to dream about food, I started stealing food at school" (48 Pelzer).
