Title: The Rosie Project
Author: Graeme Simsion
Pages read:

The book that I am reading this week is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. My mother read this book for her book club and recommended that I read it. This book is about a genetics professor with Asperger's Syndrome who is trying to find a wife. He designs a sixteen page questionnaire in order to weed out women who do not fit his specific standards. She must not drink, read horoscopes, be a vegetarian, or ever be late. And then he meets Rosie Jarman...

by Radar Staff
http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2014/03/miley-cyrus-justin-bieber-cancer-patient-make-a-wish/

I chose this to read for my Media Schmedia assignment from an online magazine site.
miley cyrus cancer girl squ|It is about this little girl who has cancer and only has months to live. She wished to meet Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber hasn't contacted the family back but Miley Cyrus refused to fulfill her wish. Miley's dad said that the girl's family should be grateful to meet Miley in person. They are hoping that those two top celebrities would make her dream of meeting them come true.

The only word I didn't know in this article was actually defined in the article. It was Osteosarcoma which is an aggressive form of bone cancer as in the article, a malignant tumor of the bone as in the dictionary.

Fast and Slow #1

Right now for my current reading I am reading Daniel Kahneman's Thinking fast and slow. I have just started the book and am on page 23/418. This book describes the activities of the mind and system one and system two.System one is instinctive thinking while system two is controlled thinking. An example of system one is 2+2. No matter what you automatically known the answer while an example of system two is 13 * 123. You experience controlled thinking. I was inspired to read this book from my parents as I am very interested in psychology and science. An odd word I found was orient (Orient to the source of a sudden sound pg. 21). Orient means to direct or position toward a particular object.

Mini shopaholic

The novel I read this week was Mini Shopaholic. The author of this wonderful novel is Sophie Kinsella. This novel has 458 pages. I chose this book because I love shopping, and off course I read the back and it seemed like a very interesting book. There was a word that I didn't know and that I wanted to find out more about what it meant, the word was surreptitious. surreptitious means when something is kept a secret. For example a sentence from the novel: '' I agree, and make a surreptitious swipe for the pony, which Minnie adeptly dodges.

The Outsiders

The Outsiders
S. E. Hinton

In class on Wednesday, we finished the novel "The Outsiders." In the last chapter, Ponyboy is sick, and when he goes back to school he starts to get bad grades, and he is having trouble at keeping up with the rest of the class. He then is assigned to write a theme for his English teacher, Mr. Syme, and if Ponyboy writes a good theme, Mr. Syme agreed to pass him with a C. Next, Ponyboy decides to pick up the copy of "Gone With the Wind" that Johnny left for him, and finds a handwritten note inside it, which was from Johnny. Ponyboy read the note, and decided on the topic for his theme. At the very end of the book, Ponyboy starts writing his theme, which started like the whole novel started.

Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte)

Tittle: Jane Eyre
Author: Charlotte Bronte
Pages: 37/682

This week, I started reading "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte. I was considering starting to read something once again, since I have more time now. I looked for American/British classical novels, I looked at "Tale of 2 cities", though I decided to read something else, and ended up with "Jane Eyre". I've also heard that, its a great novel that demonstrates historical and literature importance, it was written by Charlotte Bronte, a women, and was a great astonishment to the public, as it was a work on feminist writing.
A word, that was unclear to me was: equilibrium. The definition is: a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. SENTENCE: " I toddered, and on regaining my equilibrium retired back a step or two from his chair."

Peeps

Peeps
By Scott Westerfeld
Pg 307
read 90/307

The book that I am reading this week is called Peeps. This book is about a guy named cal in modern day day New York. It is a really good science fiction distopia book. I found this book when I went to the library and asked Mr Vlad f he had any good science fiction book that I would like to read and they he showed me Peeps. an unknown word in the book that I didn't know was trematodes. I didn't know what it was when I first saw the word but the explained what it is in the book. It is a parasite. A sentence that has the word trematodes is, "The Trematodes lay eggs in the snails eye causing it to have a ginormous craving for food" That is what trematodes actually do. They nest in a snails left eye and they cause it to have a craving for food and when the trematodes are done with the snail they cause it's left eye to be brightly colored so a bird eats it and the trematodes and then the bird poops the trematodes out in a pond and they start the whole cycle over again.

Book: HERO
Author: Mike Lupica
# of pages: 40
The book i read this week is Hero. It is at first told in the perspective of a dad and later finished by his son because he died. It is a science fiction book. If i was to briefly explain the first part of the book i would mention that it is about a family and the parents were superheroes. The sons name is Zach Harriman. He wishes to be a superhero. His dad was a Knicks fan and also was a Harvard football player, as well as a special adviser for the president of the united states. His name was Tom Herrman. He died in a plane crash now Zach knows nothing more about his father. They wanted Zach's father dead, but now the want Zach alive. It is because Tom was someone special nobody could do what he did. So now they are hopping that Zach is just like him. Zach is turning into a superhero... I chose to read this book because it seemed interesting. My brother had read it before and he really liked it. I was going to read it for the book report project but i decided to read a different book instead. Many people say that it is a great book and that it takes you along with it like you are actually in the book and now i have discovered that for myself. So far this book is great. I mean who wouldn't like to be a superhero as a kid.

Johannes Cabal the Necromancer #4

This is the 4 post of Johannes Cabal the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard and I have read all 337 pages.

I think the climax is when Leonie Barrow signs the contract to save her fathers life. Events that lead up to the climax are the whole book but the main points are: arriving at Penlow on Thurse, making women kill her baby, and then trying to get Mr. Barrow to sigh the contract. I was surprised by the fact that Johannes did everything in his power to lure Leonie to the carnival and then was suprisd that she singed the contract to save her father.
"Without drama but swift certain movements, Leonie snatched the contract and pen from where they lay and signed. She thrust the paper at Cabal. 'Leave my father alone,' she said simply. 'No!' cried both men, making Leonie jump. (Howard 305)"

Requiem by Lauren Oliver #4

DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ DELIRIUM, PANDEMONIUM OR REQUIEM
Blog Post #4
Requiem
Lauren Oliver
470/470

The Climax in my story would actually be the very end of the book. The events that lead up to the climax is when everyone climb over the walls and into the city. Lena runs around trying to find Grace for a long time and finally finds her. When Lena and Grace go back to the fight in the city they meet Alex who has been gone for the past weeks, and they reunite. They then see that the other Invalids are creaking holes in the walls and taking them down. Alex promises that he will find them and Lena and Grace run to help the others break the walls.
"Take down the walls. That is, after all, the whole point. You do not know what will happen if you take down the walls; you cannot see through to the other side, don't know whether it will bring freedom or ruin, resolution or chaos. It might be paradise,or destruction." (Oliver 470)

DIVERGENT #4 486/486, it wasn't posted all so here's the rest!

This blog post is the last quarter of this book and lots of things are going to happen one by one so try to stick along with me !
Four admits to Tris that he all this time watched her because he liked her, Tris keeps saying that shes not good enough but Four fights back, and from now on he told her to call him by his real name, Tobias. It was also fear landscape day the next day and Tris was feeling as if she is in love with Four too, as everyone gathers to the simulation room and go through their fears, Tris got kidnapping, being intimate with Four, fearing Peter that he lit her on fire, killing her family, and fear of having loss in herself. Tris remembers how her mother said to go meet Caleb and see hows hes doing because she nor her father can see him because they're in Abnegation and he's in Erudite. So Tris is finally going to go meet him, this can be very dangerous and even more life-risking for Tris because she's Divergent and the society wants Divergent people dead. Tris is trying to find Caleb and he spots her they greet each other but Caleb seems so surprised, a bit too surprised even. Caleb tells Tris that something big is happening and Erudite is planning something, it seems as if Caleb is a bit scared for Tris and tells her to go. Tris is disappointed because she thought that this would go better but I bet she thinks that Caleb would feel bad too, as Tris was walking and two large men as for her to come with them. Tris is then escorted to Jeanine's office, the head of Erudite, Jeanine keeps telling Tris that her simulation test records were never recorded, Tris didn't know that but she is Divergent and she needs to hide it. Tris was curious how Jeanine knew about her simulation tests, and she said that she invented them and that Dauntless and Erudite has some sort of a understanding with each other.
When Tris comes back Eric asks Tris what on Earth she was doing in another faction, as Eric rages at Tris, Four comes in and tries to defend her, but not in a way that he loves her but trying to get Tris out of it and calling her a " foolish girl " . Afterwards she spends some social time and girlfriend time with Christina since lately they haven't have so many in-depth conversations, and Christina admits that her and Will are dating, Tris was happy for them. Later she went to go see Four, at first he was flirty like a " boyfriend " but it seemed also like he needed to confess something too. Four tells Tris that the Dauntless leaders like Eric and everyone else have been acting strange lately and Four found war plans, Tris was curious and she then remembered what Caleb said that something big is going to happen, they were thinking war on Abnegation.

The next morning Tris wakes up because everyone else woke up, when she tried to ask Christina what was going on she didn't answer, nobody else answers either, Tris figured that they're sleepwalkers and that the war is about to start. Tris spots Four and just follows the other initiates, she stands next to him while he's dead quiet and has a blank face on, was Four not Divergent as she thought he was ? Until she felt fingers wrapping around her palm, and at then she knew he's alive, which means he's probably Divergent. As Eric is about to shoot Four's head, Tris speaks up and they run away but soon enough Jeanine catches them, they are talking back and forth about their divergence, Jeanine then injects the needle into Four's arm and from then he was a sleepwalker as well. Tris runs away and as she bumps into someone she recognizes relief comes to her face, its her mom, they head to the basement where everyone was safe and their were at least tens of people following there and that they could bust into the basement and kill everyone, her mom stops, tell Tris she loves her, and fights the soldiers, as she looks over her back she sees her mom on the ground with a pool of blood around her. When Tris gets down to the basement she greets lots of her Abnegation family and friends but Tris was bawling so much because her mother was dead. She tells everyone that they need to go stop the mind-controlling device so that the soldiers stop killing people and destroying the factions and faction-less. Caleb, her father, and Tris go to find the device, there were guards in the way, her father sacrificed himself for them and distracted them and then got shot to his head and shoulder. As they go into the room, Tobias is there holding a weapon and about to shoot them, Tris is saying that its her , Tobias won't stop, as Tris thinks that he will shoot her the bullet never was shot, therefore he's divergent. They all run on too the trains and decide to head to the Amity headquarters where everyone else is.

Percy Jackson The Sea of Monsters #4

“Ender’s Game” by Luka Dragoljic #4

I have finished a science-fiction book called “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card which has 396 pages.

As I was reading towards the end, Ender was sent to a new planet to do simulation battles against the buggers. As he starts to win these simulations, each battle he faces becomes more and more difficult to win. He fortunately achieves victories even in those complicated battle simulations. Finally, Ender has to do the final exam so that he is officially promoted to the army commander and has the authority to lead  the human army against the buggers. This was the most difficult simulation he had ever faced, but even though his army suffered terrible losses, he managed to come out victorious even from that one.

After this last test, his superior, colonel Graff, revealed to him that he wasn’t actually doing simulations, but that he was actually fighting against the real bugger army. He explained that he purposely mislead him so that Ender would not be worried about difficult choices he would need to make.  Had he known the truth, he might not have sacrificed some of his troops.  Ender was furious that the colonel had lied to him, he was devastated from grief about the people that had died, and was also sad due to the fact that he had exterminated a whole species.

I, just like Ender, was surprised that Ender wasn’t doing simulations but was actually fighting a true war. I was just not expecting it.

Here is the quote that shows how Ender’s army destroys the enemy planet:

“Within three seconds the entire planet burst apart.” (Scott Card page 333)

Gathering Blue

The Giver Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
215/215 pages
My book is very unusual because often the Climax is at the end but mine is not. The climax in my book is that when Kira's Mother died, Kira was not taken to the field to die but she was judged by The council of guardians and they kept Kira alive because she is really good of doing different kinds of things with her hands. I was not surprised because Kira is the main character but if she was not alive then the story would not go on and nothing would be happening in the book  and that would be very boring. I am really happy that Kira was not taken to the field to die and that was good luck that she had survived still.
I hope you like the book it is really good.

THIS BLOG POST CONTAINS SPOILERS. PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU WANT TO READ THE SERIES.

CLIMAX

There are a lot of conflicts going on throughout the book since it is told from 2 perspectives, but the climax in this novel is that the Bureau of Genetic Welfare (an organization founded outside of the city and formed the experiment in order to fix genetic faults within humans) is looking for a serum that could erase the city residents' memories so they can restart the experiments since the factionless took over. Since the factionless took over everything has been a mess and that i the reason for the Bureau to search for the serum. Tris and Tobias want to stop this from happening because they have friends and family in the experiment.

Quote 1: "The government has been threatening to shut down the experiments for almost a year now," Nita says. "The experiments keep falling apart because the communities can't live in peace, and David keeps finding ways to restore peace in just the nick of time. And if anything else goes wrong in Chicago, he can do it again. He can reset all the experiments at any time."
"Reset them," I say.
"With the Abnegation memory serum," Reggie says. (Roth 269)

Quote 2: "Their entire lives erased, against their will, for the sake of solving a genetic damage 'problem' that doesn't actually exist." (Roth 270)

Gathering Blue #4

The book I read for the third quarter is called "Gathering Blue", written by Lois Lowry and this is the second book of "The Giver Quartet". This book has 241 pages and I finished it.

**Some things in this blog posts are things that I have mentioned in my previous blog post**

When I read this book half way through, I thought that it was pretty interesting but also a little bit boring until the climax came up; and it was pretty shocking because my prediction was that Jonas and Gabe from The Giver would meet the main character but my prediction was incorrect.

An event that let us to the climax is when Matt, a little boy who is friends with the main character, Kira found out that she needed the color blue for "The Singer's Robe", he searched for it and came across a community where people were 'broken' but the people were peaceful, friendly, and nice; compared to the people in Matt and Kira's village.

Matt brought two gifts for Kira. A big present and a small present. The small present was the plant, for the blue and the other present came later. It was a man named Christopher, which was actually Kira's dad. This is the climax of the book.

"I brung you a giftie," Lowry 186 (Matt)

"They was horrid surprised to see me come. But they give me plenty of food. Branchie too." Lowry 188 (Matt)

(Branchie is Matt's dog)

"It be the small giftie. But the big one be coming soon," Lowry 189 (Matt)

"Kira...I'm your father." Lowry 198 (Christopher)

I was actually pretty surprised of the climax because I did not expect something like this to happen at all; since the book says that both of her parents are GONE (Kira's mother died and her dad was taken by 'Beasts' so I assumed that both of them were dead). Another thing that was part of the climax is when Kira found out that her defender, Jamison was the one who tried to kill her father, but he did not die...

"Jamison is the one who tried to kill me." Lowry 208 (Christopher)

Narnia

I read the book The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe from the Narnia Chronicles written by C.S.Lewis I finished reading the book which in total had 189 pages.

Well the climax is when Aslan the king gets killed by the White Witch. All though he comes back to life the battle between the Witches and Aslan's army's all ready started. I did get surprised that Aslan died but that was all to prevent Edmund from getting killed by the witch. I do think it is a bit stupid that he sacrificed himself if he could just kill the witch right there when she wanted to kill Edmund.

Matilda Blog post #4

240/240
After school Matilda and Ms Honey went to the tiny cottage. While walking Matilda started talking with terrific speed. She was full of energy and thought she could move anything in the world. Miss Honey explained to her that she is an unbelievably precocious child, brilliant at math and reading. her sudden ability to move tings without touching them had something to do with brain power. However, Miss Honey thought that they should be very careful with that unknown peculiar phenomenon. She tried to calm down Matilda. The tiny cottage was out of the village, it looked like a doll house, set in a wilderness of nettles, blackberry thorns and long grass. There were no furniture or appliances in the cottage. Only a little camping stove called Primus, and two wooden upturned boxes for sitting. Matilda was appalled at this place as bare as a prison cell, without curtains or carpets. On the wall there was a cheep white wash used for stables and hen-houses.There was a great mystery in the house and Matilda knew it. She was right. After serving the tea Miss Honey told her the story of her life. Her mother died when she was 2 years old and her father invited her mother's sister, her aunt to come to live with them, and take care of Miss Honey. The aunt was unkind person, who treated her badly when they were alone. Miss Honey's father was a busy doctor and spent a little time with Miss Honey. Then her father died and the aunt became her legal guardian and the actual owner. After that Miss Honey's life was a real nightmare she grew up in the house alone with that demon. She was frightened and over the years dominated by her aunt. Treated like a slave, doing all the housework she had no courage to say no to her aunt. When Miss Honey got her teacher's job, she had to give all her money to the monster. Her aunt gave her a pound a week. Miss Honey rent ed this cottage and manage to get away from her aunt. At last she was free. The horrible aunt was Miss Trunchbull. Miss Trunchnull even produced a peace of paper supposedly written by Miss Honey's father. According to the paper the father left the house to his sister in law as gratitude for all her kindness towards his daughter. It was a forgery. After the story Matilda wanted to go home and she asked Miss Honey what were the first names of Miss Honey, her father and Miss Trunchbull. Father was Magnus, Miss Honey was Jenny and Miss Trunchbull was Agatha. Matilda decided to help her teacher. After 6 days of practicing she could lift a cigar and move it in the air. It was useful for her plan. The first Thursday when Miss Trunchbull took over the class Matilda carried out her plan. In the middle of the class the principal just grabbed the boy  by his ankle holding him upside-down and then suddenly a chalk started witting a message from Magnus to Agatha " Gve my Jenny her wages, Give my Jenny the hous, Then get out of here. If you don't, I will come and get you , I will come and get you like you got me. I am watching you Agatha!" Miss Trunchbull fainted and fell on the floor, the next they she didn't turn up in school. She took her personal things from the house and disappeared from the village. Miss Honey received the last will and testament of her late father from local solicitors. The family house known as The Red House and father's savings were hers. Matilda started visiting Miss Honey at The Red House every day. They had nice talk as equals enjoying themselves. In the end Matilda's family went to Spain because her father had to run away because he was a crook he sold stolen cars and the police was after him. Matilda didn't want to go with them she stayed with Miss Honey who was more than happy to look after her. The parents agree. Surrounded by  loving people Matilda lost her special power.

Mockingjay

Susan Collins

390/390

The climax of my story is when the remaining of the team go into disguise as regular Capitol citizens. They try to make their way through Peacekeepers and citizens as the huddle around President Snows mansion, hoping that he will protect them from the Resistance. The event the led me up to this point is when Plutarch had a friend that just happened to be a stylists which could help them hide and clean them up to look more like the people of the Capitol. When the first meant the stylist (Tigris) she seemed very unusual to Katniss. Katniss couldn't trust her. But Tigris gave them food and a basement to hide while Peacekeepers searched houses for Katniss and her team. Katniss now knew that Tigris was loyal and wanted to help them. After a couple days of hiding Tigris completely dressed them up, and they fit in perfectly. Nobody ever suspected a thing. Another climax is when they are running away from the Jabberjay's.

"Naked, with long reptilian tails, arched backs, and heads that jut forward. They swarm over the Peacekeepers, living and dead, clamp on to their necks with their moths and rip off the helmeted heads." Collins, 398

Percy Jackson The Sea of Monsters #2

Post to our blog the following information:
Percy Jackson The Sea of Monsters-Rick Riordan (84/279)
Protagonist of my book is Percy Jackson. He is a demigod which means he is half god. His father is Poseidon. He lives with demigods.
Antagonist of my book is Luke Castellan. He is also a demigod and his father is Hermes. He is against Percy.

("Nice work, Tyson!" 80, Riordan) Shows that Percy is good person.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Title: The Lightning Thief
Author: Rick Riordan
Pages read: BOOK COMPLETE

The climax of this novel is when Percy reaches into his backpack and pulls out the Master Bolt, realizing that Ares framed him and he had had been carrying it almost the whole time. The event that leads up to it is Percy, Grover, and Annabeth confronting Hades who tells Percy that the Master Bolt is in his backpack. This is the climax because this is when Percy has completed the most important part of his quest and the Oracle's prophecy has come true (or so he thinks). Another particularly exciting part of the book is when Percy has to choose who to use the magic of his three pearls on when he has four people to save.

The Hunger Games

Pages: 374/374
Title: The Hunger Games, Author: Suzanne Collins

The book I have read is "The Hunger Games". I choose this book because it's so exciting, every moment you are expecting something to happen.

The climax of this novel is when Katniss and Peeta find out that there are going to be two winners.  Katniss started searching for Peeta. After one day of searching for Peeta, she found him. Peeta was laying under the leaves hiding from a Rue. After she found him, he was injured, she helped him. After all they killed Rue and they became winners. This is climax because from that moment, they became a couple and take a care of each other.

Sea of Monsters Post 3

  • Blog Post #3, Sea of Monsters, Rick Riordan

  • number of pages read: 304 (finished)

  • during Percy's journey he is faced with fighting his Ex-friend Luke and as-well as some crazy mythical creatures like trolls and giants. a mental obstacle/ conflict Percy has is that he has close relations to Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson which sometimes they get caught in sticky situations and is extremely stressful for Percy. if this were to happen of course i would be worried about me and especially my friends, but i think to over come it, you just need to have faith in them and trust them... but if they need help, of course help them!

Catching Fire

Catching Fire

Pages 174 on the laptop

Suzanne Collins

The climax of my story is at the end. Kattnes straps the wire to her arrow and shoots it up into the air. The electricity goes through it. It then destroys the arena. But before releasing she gets shocked and dies. But here is the twist. The aircraft that picks up every tribute that dies, along with her. She wakes up in it and is still alive. The book ends like that.

The book I have read  for my book report is Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone. The novel is written by J.K Rowling and has 309 pages. The climax in this book is that Hermione, Ron and Hagrid      think that Professor Snape put a spell on Harry's broom in the middle of a Quittidge game but actually Professor Quirell did because Vouldemort wishes to kill Harry like he did his parents.

Ender's Game: climax

Ender's Game
Orson Scott Card
324/324

What is the climax of your novel? What is an event that leads up to it?

*****Reading about the climax of this book would be a great spoiler (sorry that I spoil all the time)*****

The climax was mentioned in my previous post, which was about obstacles. Ender and his team are taking the final test for the Command school. The battle is very challenging because of the enemy's outnumbering army, new formations, and very unfamiliar situations. Ender lost many of his fighters and was putting a lot of risk into the battle. But Ender and his team managed to win the final test. Then here comes the climax: Ender is then told that the battle wasn't just a simulation, that it was the third and the final invasion of the buggers. Ender is very shocked that he had killed an entire species and the fighters that he had put to die to win. The climax in this book is set at the end of the book so, the book ends that he feels very guilty but then finds a bugger egg.
