This is the third blog post of Johannes Cabal the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard and I have read all the 337 pages.
The main conflict is that the protagonist, Johannes has to collect 100 souls so he can get his soul back. He has to decide which souls to take. This is an internal conflict. He has to takes souls that would have ended up in hell anyway but he makes a few mistakes.
Another conflict is against The Lord Satan who cheats so the bet isn't fair. Mr. Cabal finds out and sends him back to hell but it cost him precious time. This conflict is external and man vs man.
"'There, Johannes,' said Satan. 'That should put a little more excitement into your life.'"
