Delirium
by Lauren Oliver
I think that the climax in my book is very close to the end of the book, and it is when Lena and Alex have to escape the community. They have to run away from the community because Lena was caught and the community found out about Alex and Lena, and so they want Lena to get her procedure done so that she will not be a harm to the community, as she had fallen in love.
The procedure, or the cure, has been said to offer the perfect life for everyone, free of trouble and difficulty, and they say that the 'deliria' (aka love, the disease) is very dangerous to the community. But is that really true?
When Lena is caught, she is brought to her home and put in bed until her procedure. Lena says in the book, "Love: it will kill you and save you, both."
The climax really starts when Lena is in her bed, and suddenly she hears a motorcycle outside, which she knew was Alex's, so she jumps out of her window and collapses outside. Next, she rapidly goes to Alex and gets on the motorcycle, and they ride off. Their plan was to run away into the Wilds, where no one would ever look for them and everyone back home would forget their existence, but as the community's security is after them with cars, motorcycles, and helicopters, it is harder for them to escape. When Lena and Alex finally reach the border cutting off the Wilds from their community, they are surrounded, and the last step of their plan is to climb over the fence and run away into the Wilds, as far as they can go. Lena and Alex jump off the motorcycle they were riding and jump onto the fence. Alex tells Lena to run and to not look back until she is safe, far away into the Wilds, and tells her that he will be right behind her. The thing Lena doesn't know is that Alex never made it onto the fence, he never even tried. He sacrificed himself for Lena by staying back. And that is basically the meaning of the quote from above, "Love: it will kill you and save you, both."
The climax is one of my favorite parts in this novel as it is very interesting and it really captured my attention. When I was reading the climax, I could not stop reading and I could only wonder what would happen to both Lena and Alex. In the end, I was quite sad that Alex was left behind, and I think it was very loyal of him to help Lena get out of her troubles and help her escape the community.
