Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens: How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds

Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens: How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds

Patricia Lynne Duffy

208 pages

The book, "Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens: How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds." Has been very interesting for me to read! Some parts I do not like because it gives a lot of facts. I like when Patricia Lynne Duffy writes about her experiences and what it was like when she was little! My favorite part was when for example: when, "Patricia/ Patty needs a pink crayon! She goes to her dad and tells him that she needs a pink crayon. He shows her how to use a red crayon and a white crayon to make pink! Patty doesn't want the new mix. She wants her crayon! So her dad goes into the kitchen and he grates the red crayon and the white crayon! He melts the crayons and puts it into a broken pen dispenser. Then he bakes them for awhile. Patty is amazed that when the crayon comes out of the oven  it is a brilliant shade of pink!" I really like this passage because it shows how synesthesia effects the lives of young people. For her she couldn't imagine not having a pink crayon and she didn't want to blend two colors just by lightly coloring one color on top of the other! My quote is, "I watched in amazement as the new pink crayon was born."

The Last Lecture

Sooyoung Byun
The Last Lecture

By Randy Pausch (Autobiography)

Hey guys! The title of the non fiction book is called "The Last Lecture". It is about a man with a perfectly normal life having health problems and having to plan what he is going to achieve in his few months before death. The man's name is Randy Pausch, and he has more than ten tumors in his liver which is the problem of his death. I never knew there was this "thing" of knowing when you are going to die and to prepare your family's life after your death. He spent weeks thinking of how to spend his last few months, and thought of with his wife and three kids or something else. Then he came up with an idea. He is a lecturer and he wanted to make his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon college. He wanted it to be more special than what all the other professors have done there.

I think later on in the book he plans and makes his lecture to the students. I think this book will be extraordinary since the librarian recommended it to me and even my soccer coach, Mr. Daws said that many of his quotes he uses for soccer is based on this book and he told me this book is great. I am really looking forward to reading it.

Tittle:  The Fall of The Berlin Wall

        Author: William F.Buckley Jr.

        Pages:200

This book is talking about how the berlin wall fell down and when. The book is mostly talking about which country's and which people where involved. This book is not that hard but it is very slow, meaning that there is not a lot of action and fun parts.

I did not finish the book, I can't wait to get to the climax where everything happens
:)

All But M Life

Title: All but My Life
Author: Gerda Weissmann Klein
Pages: 261

In this book as far as I have come I do not like any special part but I like the whole idea of the life of someone who is a part of the German war and has survived. I like it how she describes all her feelings under the war and how she has survived under extreme conditions and how the war is from her point of view not the Germans.
I do not think I discovered something that might help me but I surely understand much more about the war reading someone else point of view.
About the topic of the German war I would probably like to learn more about how people who were forced to fight for the Germans felt.
So far in the book I have not found any technical words that I do not understand or anyone else would not understand.

My second book :Cry Freedom

Book Name : Cry Freedom
Author :John Briley
Number of pages that I have read : 108, number of pages that I read this time : 26

I enjoyed reading because I learned many things about racism in South Africa.
I think that I discovered many things that could help me out of school .I learned about South Africa, racism, different rules for black and white people.
Technical word: Reduce. Bruce kept his eyes on the road and did not REDUCE his speed. Reduce means: Do something slower , in this sentence reduce means that he didn't drive slower , he didn't limit his speed.

The Outsiders

The Outsiders

(by S. E. Hinton, 192 pages)

I learned that gang members are not only people from a low class, but high class citizens too. Even kids of my age can be criminals and members of brutal gangs. I chose this part because it is the main idea of the chapter i read. I discovered that kids of my age form groups which can have a very bad influence on others. I would like to learn how gang members avoid the police and law, why they are not confined and what their daily life looks like, where they get their food from, where they get their money from, where they get their clothes from, do they have a gang chief, why they fight other gangs, where they get their weapons from...

Greaser- "My hair is longer than a lot of boys wear theirs, squared off in back and long at the front and sides, but I am a greaser  and most of my neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut", 1st page

Meaning- 1) "A man who greases machinery"
                2) "A ship's engineer"

Gang- "And nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do", 1st page

Meaning- 1) A number of workmen working together
               2) A band of people going about together or working together, especially for some criminal
                   purpose

The meanings of the words "Greaser" and "Gang" were taken out of "The Oxford Dictionary of Modern English", published in 1983 by "Oxford University Press", page 283, lines 4 and 5 for the word "Greaser" and page 265 lines 24 to 28 for the word "Gang"

What Facts did I enjoy learning about?
Well the book i am reading is about girls that are self conscious of their bodies so they starve themselves. there aren't that many interesting facts so far, but i am enjoying this book because it's very interesting how even the most girls that seem perfect have terrible secrets, like for example there's this one cheerleader girl and she has eating disorders she usually doesn't eat for a week to show other people how strong she can be. then theres phoebe a sweet girl that gets good grades and does not care what she looks like she is the bigger type. There are a few facts along the way, like how girls sometimes make themselves throw up their food or starve themselves to get thin. i did not really enjoy these facts but they are interesting.

Did I discover anything that might help me outside of school?
With this book I think i will learn about what food can sometimes do to you, I wouldn't make myself throw up or starve myself because I like who i am but maybe i can help someone if they are in that situation. This book is based on true stories and was written by a psychotherapist who helps these people everyday and maybe this story might help me to not do those things or to prevent those things from happening to other people.

What else would i like to learn about this topic?
I would like to learn how to help the people that are starving themselves and to make them feel better because i know this happens to a lot of teens and is really horrible how they care so much about how they look that they would starve themselves or make themselves throw up.

a technical word:
Bulimia- An eating disorder, a desire to loose weight by overeating and then fasting and self throw up
She decided she would make some excuse about why she couldn't go to practice. If they dropped her, awful though that would be, at least her bulimia would't be discovered which would be far worse. -PAGE 25

Book report

As you can see the book name is Ediths story. The author is a woman named Edith it is her diary from world war two. There is 238 pages in this wonderful but sad book. I enjoy learning about the world war two  I'm not sure why I like it that much because it is full of misery but I find it interesting. Maybe because I found "The Diary of Anne Frank" so interesting the two books are very similar. There wasn't anything that really something that helped me with something in life except to appreciate what I have and never take anything for granted because that all could be gone tomorrow. I would diffidently like to learn anything else about this topic it doesn't really matter what. "Without the prodding, enthusiasm, and professional expertise of my daughter Hester" (Book Edith's Story)  the word it prodding, ."To jab or poke, as with a pointed object." Author: Derek L.T. Gill                                                       Picture:

My favorite part was when Robin and his two friends Art (Arthur) and Jim sail out with there 20 ft slooop out to sea. Many concerns start about the boys on the radio, news, if they are still alive from the huge storm out on the open but they some pull back to land. later they have to pay a $100 penalty. This my favorite part because of the exciting mood the author shows. The couradge can of course push level of confidence up and always push me to do more and never give up at anything I do." Britain Since 1789

Hey Everyone!
So for this book report, I am doing the book Britain Since 1789- A Concise History the author of the book is called Martin Pugh. The book basically talks about how Britain has changed of the course of centuries. The book gives detailed information about the whole features of a country, it basically tells us about the economy and the the extreme growth in the population, as well as everything major that had happened to the developed country. Before we start with the answering of the questions, here is the basic information about the book:
Title: Britain Since 1789- A Concise History
Author: Martin Pugh
Number of Pages: 249

What facts did you enjoy learning about?
I enjoyed learning about the growth of the population. The reason I enjoyed this particular area in the book is because the way the numbers increase is quite extraordinary. As I opened the book, the very first sentence was astonishing.

"In the early eighteenth century Britain was little more than a middle ranking European power. Her population in 1700 has been estimated at 9 million compared with 19 million in France and 17.5 million for Russia, for example. Britain's army, some 75,000 men, were dwarfed by the 350,000 French troops and the 222,000 Russians."

The reason I found this particular part very interesting was because there was such a major difference when doing the comparison between these three countries. Britain and France we so far apart in the population, but now they are the same. Russia has a SMALLER population than France, but now the population of France is three times the population of Russia.

Did you discover anything that might help you outside of school?

Since I am reading about one particular country, I don't think I will really need the extensive information that I had read in the book. In my opinion, I think it would be best used in school related purposed. For example, in humanities class if I ever need to do a presentation or poster on the United Kingdom, this book we be extremely useful.

What else would you like to learn about this topic?

I would like to learn more about the industrial growth. How Britain's economy changed in the past couple of centuries, how it improved. I think that the book has information about the economy for sure.

Pick a technical work, write the sentence you found it in, and write the page number:

The word I choose is demographic I did not find it in a sentence, It was more of a subtitle. The subtitle is: The Demographic Revolution and I found it on page 1. The meaning of demographic means: relating to the dynamic balance of a population especially with regard to density and capacity for expansion or decline, for more information on the word visit http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/demographic

Animalogy-Conquest Of The World

Title: Animalogy-Conquest Of The World

Author: Bassam Imam

# of pages read: 100 pg.

Picture:

This book is not an auto/biography, this is learning about pertaining to animal use, animal consumption, animal conservation, and animal protection. The site that I got it from is: http://www.free-ebooks.net/ebook/Animalogy-Conquest-of-the-Animal-World. A cool fact that I came across while reading this book was that there are about 80 million cats in the world and 70 million dogs in the world. There are more cats than dogs! But, between 5 to 7 million cats and dogs are put in animal shelters annually. This is very interesting to me because I never knew that about 5 to 7 million cats and dogs become stray dogs and maybe just some of them are taken to animal shelters. The worst part is that it happens annually.

These types of information can help us in school because for our CAS meeting (community and service), we decided to go to the animal shelter to give the dogs equipment such as toys, give them baths, walk them, etc.  We will do this by raising enough money to get some treats for the dogs. This is also the reason why I was interested in this book. I wanted to know more about the animal world. More things that I would like to know are how dogs and cats behave, what diseases they could carry, more about Bassam's interests with animals, and more thoughts of the author. A meaning I had no idea of was the word, prevalent. This word was in page number 60. I found out that prevalent means:

widespread; of wide extent or occurrence; in general use or acceptance.
2.
having the superiority or ascendancy.
3.
Archaic . effectual or efficacious.

The Story of My Life by Helen Keller

Name of book: The Story of My Life
Author: Helen Keller
Number of pages: 225

This book is an autobiography of Helen Keller. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882 she was struck by a very bad fever and became blind and deaf. In 1887 she first meets her teacher (Mrs. Sullivan) who teaches her to communicate and later to read and write.

1. What facts did you enjoy learning about? Explain why you chose this  particular part.

I found out many facts about Helen Keller's life that I didn't know before reading this book. I found out how Helen Keller learned to first communicate with her teacher, Mrs, Sullivan. Whenever Helen was using an object her teacher would finger spell the word into Helen's palm. I chose this part because I didn't know that blind people communicated in that way which is why I found it very interesting that they use sign language to spell words into each other's palms.

2. Did you discover anything that might help you outside of school?

I discovered that if you have a goal and you try your best to reach a goal and put a lot of work to it than nothing can stop you from achieving your goal. This was showed in this book because Helen Keller really wanted to learn how to read, write and speak and she always tried her best and found learning fun and not only she achieved her goal to read and write in English, but also in German, French and Latin.

3. What else would you like learn about the topic?

I would like to learn more about the Braille alphabet (a writing system that enables blind people to read and write) and how to use it.

4. Pick a technical word, write the sentence you found it in and the page number it's from, explain the meaning.

Word: Quadruped
Meaning: An animal that has four feet.
I found this word on page 58.
"I thought I might just as well describe my pet in order to know it- order, vertebrate; division, quadruped; class, mammalia; genus, felinus; species, cat; individual, Tabby."

Going Solo

Title: Going Solo
Author: Roald Dahl
Number of pages: 205

1. What facts did you enjoy learning about? Explain why you chose this particular part.
Usually, I don't like snakes and aligators and similar animals. In the middle of the book snakes are very common and described perfectly. I really enjoyed learning about their defects and benefits, which are poison which aren't. Also the author made the ''story'' about snakes very ineteresting with many exiting actions!
2. Did you discover anything that might help you outside of the school?
Yrs, I did. Imagine this: you are adult and you love adventures. You decide to go to jungle and learn about wild animals, but instead of learning snake wants to attack you. You don't know how to defense yourself and you start to panic. But then you remember you read a book called ''Going Solo'' and you remember snake's defects and you surrvive thanks to the book! :)
3. What else would you like learn about the topic?
I think I'm getting boring with the snakes. So i would like to learn more about his family. In the book it doesn't describe it that much. Also one interesting fact is that the main character actually doesn't have a name. He does but it doesen't mention in the book. It is an autobiography. He describes he's adventures.
4. Pick a tehnical word, write the sentence you found it in and the page number it's from, explain the meaning.

ANAESTHETIST

Sentence: Having at this moment no eyelids to open and shut, I hoped the anaesthetist wouldn't start thinking that his famous new wonder anaesthetist had put me to sleep when it hadn't.
Page: 109.
Meaning: An anaestherist is used to temporarily reduce or take away sensation, usually so that otherwise painful procedures or surgery can be performed.

A Street Cat Named Bob
Author: James Bowen
Number of Pages: 288

"When James Bowen found an injured cat curled up in what passed for his living space, he had no idea that a simple act of kindness would change his life." -Unknown

What facts did you enjoy learning about? Why did you chose this particular part?
I enjoyed learning about the story of James Bowen's life and how he had gotten to where he is now. I chose this part because it explains his love for cats and all the difficult things he's been through. It is a really touching part to read in this book and made me feel sorry for him. You also get to know him as a person a lot more. I think that if he had not grown up with cats or had a passionate love for them he might of seen Bob but just walked past him and what would be a great experience that he would never have forgotten. It would also be a great story to tell to people who are curious.

Did you discover anything that might help you outside of school?
I discovered that even if you are not the wealthiest or most lucky person in the world there will still be room for a great friendship, whether it's with an animal or a person. Also, I learned that such a small action that you make can make an impact on the rest of your life that you never would imagine could happen. This could lesson could help you a lot in life especially if you lose all the hope in the world you will know that you can always go to your best friend (even if it's an animal) talk everything out and it might make you feel a whole lot better :)!

What else would you like to learn about the topic?
I would like to learn more about how Bowen came to the point where he would write a book about his inspiring experience. I wonder what made him make that decision? I also wonder if he will write any more books that aren't related to his life, if he will become an author?

Technical Word
VENDOR: A person who sell things on the street or sell things in general, they sell small toys, magazines, newspaper, souvenirs, etc.

Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens: How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds

Blue Cats and Chartreuse Kittens: How Synesthetes Color Their Worlds
Patricia Lynne Duffy
208 pages

First of all I found out about synesthesia by a children's book called, "A Mango Shaped Space" by Wendy Mass. I got interested and decided to read more about it. This is what my book is about! First of all I was excited to find out that only about two out of 1,000 have synesthesia! There are also different kinds of synesthesia. There is a kind that makes you see different shapes whenever you hear a certain noise or another kind is that every alphabet letter and every number has a color! For example: The author of this book has synesthesia. When she was little she had trouble writing the letter R. For her P was a yellow letter and R was a orange letter. When she finally found out how to draw the letter R. She was amazed to see that she could change a yellow letter into an orange letter by just adding a line! This could help me later in life because not many people know about synesthesia and this could help me later in life because if one of my classmates has synesthesia and they do not know what it is, I could help!

I would like to learn more about how this effects the people who have synesthesia in there daily lives! I also wonder what it would be like to have synesthesia. I think some parts would be annoying but other parts I guess it would be different! A word from my book is, "photisms" the sentence it comes from is, "Some synesthetes report that their photisms are projected onto a kind of external screen." Photism is a noun and it means, "A luminous image or appearance of a hallucinatory character." This passage is from page 83 in my book!

Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World

Author - Jack Weatherford
Number of Pages - 270

1. I enjoyed to learn about some of the battles Genghis Khan had with some his enemies. The one I read about was about him taking over a large city making the capital also surrender. This was interesting because I like learning about battles and wars.

2. This knowledge could help if I was to study the history of Asia or Genghis Khan.

3. There is more I would like to learn about the topic for me its very interesting.

4. Monumental "In monumental effort, Hoelu saved them- all of them."
Found on page 20, means "Massive or very hard to do"

The First Three Minutes

The First Three Minutes

Title: The First Three Minutes
Author: Steven Wienberg
Pages: 226 (kindle edition)

During my reading I really liked learning about the measurements of time called Planck seconds named after Max Planck. These seconds are used to measure units of time of roughly 10−43 seconds. What I thought was interesting was during the big bang the universe expanded from an infinitely small and dense unit it became the size of our sun in about 4.5 Planck seconds, remember 1 Planck seconds equals roughly 10−43 seconds. I think I have learned a lot that will benefit my knowledge not only in school but also outside of school, like in science. I would like to know more about the big bang theory and ideas that relate to it, such as theories and equations.

For my technical word, I chose: "The Doppler Effect”, as used in the sentence: "The technique makes use of a familiar property of any sort of wave motion known as the Doppler Effect."

(Found on 7% for kindle edition.)

The Doppler Effect is a change in frequency of a wave (or other periodic event) for an observer moving relative to its source. For example, if you stand at a train station when a train is coming to pass you, the sound waves it produces get louder as the train gets nearer and then quieter as it goes away.  Furthermore when we measure the time between when the wave crests collide with our instruments as the time they leave the source.

Going Solo

I'm re-doing my blog post because the previous one wasn't right, and I hope that you are going to actually like this one! :)

*The book that I am reading is written by the writter Roald Dahl and by the time I spent readin this book I can tell that he is a very good writter, and that he wrote books that keep me interesting while I am reading them.
Roald Dahl was born on 13 September 1916 and died on 23 November 1990.  He was bor in Wales to Norwegian parents-Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl . He also served to the british Royal Air Force durnig World War II.
He was well known as a  British novelist, short story writer, poet, and screenwriter. In 1920, when Dahl was three years old, his seven-year-old sister, Astri, died from appendicitis.  Weeks later, his father died of pneumonia at the age of 57 while on a fishing trip in the Antarctic. You can actually see that Roald Dahl had a very hard life and it is amazing how he became author of the most famous books!
Dahl married American actress Patricia Neal on 2 July 1953 at Trinity Church in New York City.  They had five children: Olivia, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. Their marrige was very successful and it lasted amzing 30 years. He was very happy durnig the marrige with Patricia. But on November 1962, Olivia Dahl died of measles encephalitis at age seven. Dahl subsequently became a proponent of immunisation and dedicated his 1982 book The BFG to his daughter. He was sensitive man and bad luck was ''comming'' for him again. He lived very hard life and lost the mos important people in his life and it's amazinh how did he even continued to live! On the left cornner you can see he's wife Patricia and him looking very happy and enjoying their marrige.
Dahl's first published book  was "A Piece Of Cake" on 1 August 1942, and his first children's book was His first children's book was ''The Gremlins''. He was also famous for his short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending.

Here is the picture of a

      book that I am reading.

So,I hope you learn something from my writing and I hope ypu liked it! I also read 40 pages more for this week, and here is what happened...P.S. My book is the same as it was 2 week ago!

By the time they had seen the Germans safely into the prison camp and he had made report, it was nearly midnight. He went off home to get a shower and some sleep. He was tired and dirty. He was slowly begging to relax as the alcohol got into the blood-stream. Through the wide-open french windows he could here the Indian Ocean pounding the cliffs below the house and as always when he sat in that chair, he turned his head a little in order to allow his eyes to rest upon his beautiful sliver Arab sword that hung on the wall over the door. But the sword was gone!!! The sword was long and curved and the sliver scabbard was wonderfully chased with an intricate design showing various phases in the life of the Prophet.

He thought that Mdisho, his friend, has something to do with it. He was wondering where he was, but Mdisho went away early in the evening. So he went to sleep. He woke up in the middle of the night. Mdisho was standing just inside the french windows with the light of the half-moon shining down on him from behind. He was breathing fast and there was a wild ecstatic look on his face and he was naked except for a small pair of black cotton shorts. In his right hand he held the sword. He had never seen Mdisho like this before. The wild look on his face and the heavy breathing and the sweat all over his body made him more nervous than ever. Finally, he woke up! Mdicho had a strange dream. He had a dream about Germans, about war. Mdisho dreamed how he killed people with that sword and he was re-telling the story and he was very supprised. Mdisho stopped and finished his story, and he knew it was true. Mdisho stood there holding the sword in one hand and the scabbard in the other, staring at them with eyes as bright as two stars. He told Mdisho that he had killed two people in war with that sword, but he couldn't tell anyone. On some way, Mdisho made it and didn't tell anyone about the secret, even his father didn't know!

Marie Antoniette

Title of book: Marie Antoniette
Author of book: Antonia Fraser
Number of pages: 458
Number of pages read: 60

The book I'm reading at the moment is a biography about the french queen Marie Antoniette. The book has a total of 458 pages, and in these sixty pages I read, I learned about the begging go Marie's life, which isn't as perfect as it seems. During these pages, I saw and read how people used to live in the past, and when I compare it to today, it is a very big difference. One of my favorite parts in part one, was how there were very strong descriptions of her, and her dresses. The book clearly stated how she would only get the finest of everything. One of the most interesting, but still scary in the same time, was one of the facts I learned about how people used to marry people younger then eighteen. No, I haven't discovered anything yet that might help me in daily life, or somewhere out of school, but I sure did learn a lot from the pages I read so far. Honestly, I think this book is very though, so most of the words I have to look up (which is really good practice) online or in a dictionary because I don't understand them. The book as I said in the previous sentence is very difficult to understand, but once you put your mind to it, its as easy as any other one. There is no interesting technical word, because most of them are in French, so i don't understand. But If I had to choose one, there would probably be the ones on page 28, where it talks about smallpox, and other subjects such as those.

A place called here

Title of book: A Place Called Here
Author of book: Cecelia Ahern
Number of pages: 484
Number of pages read: 80

Since the book I read is not non-fiction, I couldn't really complete the assignment,so I will just summarize of what I read so far. The main character in the book is Sandy Shortt. She is a tall girl that is trying to find out what happens to the things that just disappear. It all started when a girl that was mean to many girls disappeared. Since then Sandy kept wondering what happened to people and objects that just just weren't there anymore. Even when a sock got lost, Sandy would always ask questions like; what happened to the sock? Where did the sock go? Because she would always ask these questions, her parents called a psychiatrist to help her answer some of her questions. Even though he wasn't able to answer a majority of her questions she really liked him.  She kept seeing him until she got the job she wanted. At the end when she had to say bye to him they kissed. I can't wait to continue reading because so far there are many thing that still need to be discovered to make this book interesting.

Title: Moonwalk
Author: Michael Jackson

My book that I am reading I called Moonwalk by Michael Jackson. I enjoy reading this book because it tells a lot of facts about Michael childhood and his other part of his life. My favorite part till now is the part when he entered the band Jackson 5. Jackson 5 is a band that his family made by mixing all of the kids to sing. I like this part of the book because first of all, he was five years old and he was great at singing. He was much better from some of his brothers. That is what I enjoyed the most in this part of the book.

The Tipping Point

The title of this book is "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. This book has 279 pages. Some facts that I learned so far are that during 1995 to 1996 a city named Baltimore was attacked by an epidemic of syphilis which is a sexually transmitted disease (for more  detail check the 1st link). As well this disease can be passed from a  pregnant mother on to her baby. Another fact that according to the "Center for Disease Control" was that this disease had increased because of the use of crack cocaine. "Which causes risky sexual behavior." When the people who go to the neighborhoods that have these disease to buy cocaine and then they go back to their nicer and not infected neighborhoods and bring the disease and infect them. Something that I learned is some not to use cocaine and I learned what some symptoms of syphilis are so if I ever see anyone who has them I would know what they are and I would know to sty away from them and tell them to go and get checked.  Something extra I would like to learn about is maybe see why cocaine cause these affects on the human body. A technical word in this book is CDC. This term is used on page 15 near the end of the page. CDC is an abbreviation of "Center for Disease Control".

I am planing on changing the book.

Non Fiction 10/25/12 ~Petra

The Code Book
Simon Singh
82 pages read

While reading this book, I found ciphers especially interesting. Ciphers are when the letters in a message are replaced by other letters or symbols, while codes are when entire words are replaced. If you knew a bunch of ciphers, you could use them to communicate with your friends in secret, leaving notes on their lockers or notebooks, and no one else would be able to uncover them, unless of course there was a trained cryptanalyst (codebreaker) in our school. You could use ciphers as well as codes to hold meetings for clubs and such without having uninvited guests. I'd love to learn more about how exactly to break codes, but the book explains so much that I think that any more would make me an expert cryptanalyst.

Technical term: Vingère cipher (p. 48)

The Vingère cipher is a cipher that is almost impossible to break. It consists of each letter having twenty-six possibilities of being replaced, each letter of the alphabet. So, each letter could be represented 26 different ways. To make it easier for the intended receiver to break it, there is a keyword that is used. You take the keyword and repeat the letters as many times as there are letters in your text, and so each letter in the text that corresponds to a letter in the keyword gets coded by the cipher startingwith the letter in the keyword. For instance, suppose I was coding the letter 'P', and it matched up with the letter 'H' in the keyword, so I would use the alphabet starting with 'H' to code 'P'. Using this method, 'P' would be changed to 'W' in your text.

Title of book: A Night to Remember
                                            Author: Walter Lord
                                           Number of pages: 215

The book that I am currently reading is called A Night to Remember by Walter Lord. John Walter Lord Jr. was born on October 8th 1917 in Baltimore,Maryland and died on May 19th 2002 in Manhattan, New York. Mr. Lord was and American author, best known for the book A Night to Remember a documentary of the RMS Titanic. After publishing the Night to Remember the book was made into a popular 1958 British Movie. When writing A Night to Remember, Lord took his time to track 63 Titanic survivors to gather their stories. Another very famous book that Walter Lord authored was also about the Titanic titled The Night Lives On, published in 1986.  In Walter Lords later years he became very famous for his knowledge of the” Titanic catastrophe”. Even at times he would hold lectures at meetings for the Titanic Historical Society.  In 1977 during the filming of the Titanic, Lord was James Camerons (director of the Titanic) “consultant”. He gave him expert advice and information from the survivors on what happened on the night of the sinking. After the original Titanic movie there was a sequel called Ghost of the Abyss which was dedicated to Walter Lords memory.
