Inkheart Post 2

Inkheart
Cornelia Funke
563 Pages

The main character in my novel is Meggie. She is a 12 year old girl that lives with her father Mo.  Meggie and Mo are really close because Meggie never knew her mother.  Her mother disappeared when Meggie was three so Meggie and Mo rely on each other and look after one another.  Meggie loves Mo more than anyone in the world. Meggie has fair hair and looks like her mum (she wishes she looks like her dad). It takes Meggie time to warm up to people because she keeps moving and now lives in a secluded place with her dad. Meggie loves to read. With Mo’s help she taught herself how to read at the age of five.  Her books give her comfort; they give her a place to escape to when she is feeling bored, sad or even scared. Meggie is strong-willed.  When Dustfinger (is first introduced to the story) she stays awake and spies even though her dad tells her to go to bed (Page 7).  Also, she refuses to leave in the van until her dad tells her what is going on.  She stands up for what she believes in. She is proud. She is brave and loyal.  When Elinor distrusts Dustfinger Meggie trusts him.

The Everafter

The Everafter
Amy Huntley
244 pages

This week I continued reading the book "The Everafter" by Amy Huntley. So far the main character definatley is Maddy. She is the girl who is dead and is traped in the world of Is full of memories of her past life. Maddy is a type of girl who easily gets scared and worried a lot. An example I found in the book is; "I'll get it," I assure everyone. But I'm only halfway up the stairs before I get major creeps. I run back down. "I can't do it" I say. "It's too creepy up there." (pg. 78) This explains how at the beginning Maddy is fine with going to get something but at the end she gets scared because it is creepy up there. I think this is nothing to be ashamed of but sooner or later she has to stop being scared, I can't wait to finish reading this fantastic book because of Maddy and all the personalities and traits she has!

Born At Midnight By C. C. Hunter

The main character in my novel is Kylie Galen. Kylie Galen is the main protagnist in the Shadow Falls series. For a majority of her life, she had always known that she was different from others. She just didn't know how different. She is 16 years old, she has blond hair and blue eyes, and her species is a chameleon (explanation in the book). One of Kylie's personality traits are is that she is very curious. She always had a burning question in her that was never truly answered: What am I? She doesn't have a clue about her heritage, she is discovering different types of powers that are within her, and trying to find answers to that one question. On page 209, she had a lot of questions for Holiday (assistant) about how to turn off her powers once and for all. In fact, they come usually during the night. It was hard for Holiday to answer all of her questions, and decided to wait for her to figure out by herself.

"The Hobbit" by J.R.R Tolkien

The Hobbit
Author: J.R.R Tolkien
Number of Pages: 255

The main character in my book is called Bilbo Baggins. He is a hobbit, (which is why the book is called "The Hobbit"), which means he is much shorter than your average human (half our height). Most hobbit's have giant feet that are very hairy and so they don't wear shoes. Hobbit's don't have beards! They like to dress in bright colours, and are good at disappearing quietly and quickly. Usually, hobbit's are meant to be fatter in the stomach than any other part of their body. Also, personality wise, hobbits don't like to go on big adventures or very far away from their home/"small village," they would rather stay at home read books in their garden/inside house. Bilbo's mother was a tuck therefore Bilbo isn't fully hobbit and he is a bit taller than normal hobbit's. Bilbo is a very relaxed, calm, and an organized person. It shows that he is organized since his house is described as very neat and a house where everything has its place as well as this it is shown because in the 1st chapter Bilbo gets annoyed when his unexpected visitors arrived and basically ruined his whole home and threw plates and cloths, etc everywhere.
Quote from book: "They are (or were) a little people about half our height, and smaller than the bearded dwarves. Hobbits have no beards..." (J.R.R Tolkien pg. 2) This quote does continue to be around a paragraph but it describes everything from the personality of hobbits and how they look physically.

The Two Towers

THE TWO TOWERS
J.R.R. TOLKIEN

I am reading the book The Two Tower. This book is in the series of the three books of Lord of The Rings. I am reading this book for my book report. There are a few main characters and I choose to tell you about Frodo. He is a hobbit who found the ring of Mordor and his mission is to go to the Mordor volcano and destroy it since it is the only place he can destroy the ring.  He is a smart hobbit very young and also he wanted to go to destroy the ring even if nobody asked him to do that.

Catching Fire

Catching Fire
Suzanne Collins
470 pages

I am reading the second book of the hunger games. In this book the main character is Katniss Everdeen. She is one of the winners of the hunger games. She is an adventurous person. She cares a lot about the people she loves, she would do anything for them. She was a poor girl before so she had to go hunting in the woods and then sell the animals in the street but after she won the games she got a huge supply of money and food but she doesn't show it off. Katniss has brown long hair and usually keeps it out of her face. She is known as the girl on fire because she and peeta were wearing suites on fire for the hunger games opening ceremony. She and peeta are from 12th district. She has a mother and a younger sister named Primrose, her father was killed by an explosion while he was coal mining.

Katniss would do anything for her friends and family. In book one her sister is chosen to compete in the hunger games but Katniss volunteers in her place and Katniss goes to the hunger games instead of Primrose. In book two Katniss must pretend to love Peeta to keep gale safe "Peeta, Remeber how i told you I was kinda faking being in love with you? well, i really need you to forget about that now and act extra in love with me or president snow might kill gale"(page 40) she doesn't actually say that to peeta but she was thinking of how she would say that to peeta.

For now, the main character in my novel is a female black bear called Lusa. She is quite small and has very dense black furr. She is very honest, persistant and focused on her quest, which is to find Toklo the grizzly and tell him that his dead mother Oka, who sent Lusa on this task, loves him. "But she had promised Oka that she will pass on the message to her only surviving cub" is a sentence on the second page that illustrates her persistance to fulfil her promise.

Twilight Blogpost

Twilight
Title: Twilight
Author: Stephanie Meyer
Number of pages: 114 read out of 550

The book I just started reading, is the number one bestseller, by Stephanie Meyer. The book consists from 550 pages, and it is the first book in the series Twilight. In the first few chapters of the book, the book explains how Bella Swan is new to town. The author states, how she's having some difficulties with picking the right people to 'hang out' with, but soon falls for the Cullens. The Cullens, are a bunch of vampires, that have been in that school for ages. There is Alice, who has the power to see the future. There is Jasper, Alice's boyfriend, and a valued member of the team, there is Rosalind, who was bitten by a vampire in her teens, three hundred years ago, and apart from the 'mother, and father' there is Edward Cullen. Edward is described to be one of the nicest vampires you'll ever meet. His powers allow him to read everyones mind, but Bella's. Soon, Edward and Bella start falling in love with each other, but there is always something in the way.. Whether its Jacob (Bella's werewolf friend) The "Voulturi" (Which are the government in vampire world) or simply the fact, that Bella might be in great danger if anything happens between them. I think Jacob provides an example of his personality, on page 112-113, when he demonstrated his rood behavior towards Bella.

For now, this book seems very interesting and fascinating to me, because I find books about vampires and werewolves interesting because of the action that occurs between them. The only thing that I still don't get, is that when is Bella gonna figure out that Edward is a vampire? I find this very annoying, to have to read about how much he lies to her. Even though, its for her own good, I wish that he would just tell her. At this point, this book is getting a 9/10, or a 10/10, because its keeping me interested, and I can't wait to read more!

The Hunger Games: Katniss Everdeen

Title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Number of pages: 91 read out of 454

The main character of my novel is Katniss Everdeen. She is a honest, brave, caring, sensitive but also a scared girl. The book is written in Katniss's point of view, so everytime she describes her situation, she sounds honest. She is brave and caring because she stood up for her sister Prim as a tribute of District 12 for the Hunger Games. Since the Hunger Games is a game where you either kill or get killed, she was brave to volunteer as a tribute but also she was caring to volunteer so her sister will stay alive. In my opinion I think there is a side to Katniss when she is not sensitive at all and another side where she is sensitive inside. Also because the book is written in her point of view, she explains how she doesnt trust Peeta very much, how she worries about Prim and her mother and how she thinks she does not have the best skills as a hunter to hunt down people. She is definitly scared especially because Peeta and her "coach" for the Hunger Games is drunk all the time and does not explain the important things to them, such as how to survive in the arena.

"All the pieces are still fitting together, but I sense he has a plan forming. He hasn't accepted his death. He is already fighting hard to stay alive. Which also means that kind Peeta Melmark, the boy who game me the bread, is fighting hard to kill me." pg. 73

This is an example of Katniss being sensitive and scared. She does not know if she should trust Peeta or if she should just count him as another animal to hunt. She is also scared that if she trusts Peeta, he will come to hunt her down. I think this book will be more and more different than the movie the more I read the book.

The Graveyard Book.

The title of the book I was reading is "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. This book has a total of 307 pages. I just started reading the book and there are a couple of main characters in this book but my favorite two characters are Mr. and Mrs. Owens. Mr. Owens is a a man in his mid forties but he is a ghost with his wife Mrs.Owens they have been married for a very long time (250 years). Both of them are very nice and  and giving and you can see that they have a huge heart. One example of that is when they accepted to take care of a child who wasn't theirs because he was in trouble.

"Are you certain" he asked "Are you sure?"
"Sure as I have been of anything" said Mrs. Owens.
"Then yes. If you'll be the mother, I'll be its father"

Warriors Super edition: Crookedstar's Promise

Title: Warriors Super Edition: Crookedstar's Promise
Author: Erin Hunter
Number of Pages: 491
Stormkit is the main character (though later his name is changed to Crookedkit, Crookedpaw as an apprentice, Crookedjaw as a warrior, and at last Crookedstar as the leader. Crookedstar has a pale brown tabby fur with green eyes and a jaw twisted right under his chin barley visible on one side of his face.At first he has been weak and skinny for the moons he broke his jaw having trouble eating, but as he grew used to his jaw he has become bigger and more muscular. Crookedstar is a brave, loyal, courageous and hopeful cat who only wants the best fro his clan but making an perilous promise as an kit may just make things different. -"Crookedkit." He murmured his new name. "I am Crookedkit." He glanced around his Clanmates. No one met his gaze. Only the shimmering orange-and-white cat. Her amber gaze shone, unblinking, at him. She believes in me. With a rush of hope, Crookedkit lifted his chin. "I am Crookedkit." He repeated" (Page 55 Erin Hunter)

The Quest Begins

Author: Erin Hunter
Number of pages: 167 - 293

In my book there are three main characters, Kallik, Lusa and Toklo. Their dream is to find happy place in the wild where they can live happily with lot amount of food and friends. In the book my favorite character is probably Lusa. Lusa is a black bear which is so young and wants to see how it is in wild because she is in the zoo. I like Lusa because she has really big sense of humor and she is so friendly. She wants to try almost everything. She wants to know everything about wild and life in wild, but nobody wants to tell her that because everybody thinks that zoo is better than a wild because they have here enough food, but in the wild you need to hunt for a food. In zoo flat-faces just bring it in bowl. It is so easier to live in zoo then in wild, but she thinks that in wild there are so many creatures to meet, so much different smells and things. Her friend Oka came in grizzly bowl few days ago, but Oka is desperate about her sons Tobi and Toklo. Toklo is one of three main characters and his mother did not want to help him anymore, so she just stranded next to river when flat-faces found her and brought her in the grizzly bowl. Lusa asks her everything about wild, but she is so desperate so she didn't talk too much. She wants to go in wild one one way or another no matter what happens. One example about Lusa's wanting to do everything is everybody knew how to climb up the tree except her, but she was too young for that, but she still wanted to try and do that. She did it. This was on page 28.

Eternal

Name of a book: Eternal
Author: Cynthia Leitich Smith
Number of pages: 307

Hello everyone! I really hope you liked my previous post, and that you're going to like this one also.
Since my book is about vampires, my main character needs to be a little bit scary.
The main character in this book is a teenage girl Miranda. She is 17 years old.
I think she is very special, and she knows some special things that other teenagers do not know. She has her guardian angel, that always keeps his eye on her, but unfortunately, she doesn't know that her guardian angel actually exist.
She is really weird person, and she has her only best friend, Lucy. Miranda believes her, and she is always trying to be loyal. She doesn't have father, and her childhood was messed up, and Lucy was the only one that accept her as a friend, as a best friend.
When she becomes vampire, Lucy is not by her side anymore. She doesn't have her best friend anymore. Bu she's being brace, and accepting all 'vampire rules' and she's trying to stick with them.
I think she is not a give-upper and she is giving all effort that she has into some important things.
Imagine you living normal exciting teenage life, and next morning waking up as a vampire with some scary guy next to you. She is trying to stay positive, but sometimes she's really dramatic and Lucy used to call her 'Drama Queen'.
And the most importantly, she is not afraid to show herself. She is always 100% of her, 100% of her personality. Honest, carrying and sensitive. Three words that pop up on my mind when I think of a girl called Miranda. :)

I found one really good example in a book on page 40.
''I try to do it. It's hard to form word. It hurts. Can't... But I need to.'' This proves how Miranda was brave after all scary things that happened to her.
Another example from page 40.
'' Lucy!!! My eyes open, and i struggle to sit. Where's my Lucy?'' This proves how connected she was with her best friend, she could hardly live normal live without her other half, her best friend, her Lucy.

13 Treasures

Name of book: 13 Treasures
Author: Michelle Harrison
Number of pages: 350
The main character of this book is Tanya, a thirteen-year-old girl, who has the ability to see fairies. She has long brown hair and brown eyes. Some of her characteristics are that she is very brave, kind, adventurous and likes to read.  Tanya lives with her mother, but is sent away for the summer to live at her grandma's house called Elvesden Manor with her grandma named Florence. At first Tanya dislikes her grandma and doesn't want to spend the summer with her but soon she finds out the truth about her heritage of the fairy sight and that her grandma was very strict just in order to keep Tanya safe. One example from the book where Tanya's bravery is shown is when she runs after her dog Oberon into the woods even though there have been many scary legends about the forest (page 73, 74 and 75).

Of Men and Monsters - Jakub

Of Men and Monsters
Author - William Tenn
Number of Pages - 360

The main character in my book is Eric the Only or Eric the Eye, he is a young boy that soon is to become a hunter and given a new name Eric the Eye. Eric has a very good eyesight which allows him to spot many things when stealing from the monsters that took over Earth. He will be given the name Eric the Eye because mainly because of his eyesight. He is young and very courageous to go to monster territory by himself to steal from the monster aliens. One example from the story is "It was a different color than the wall, he noted, and a different textured material." (Tenn 39). As you see this quote shows his good eyesight in the dark burrows.

Percy Jackson: Book 5 The Last Olympian

Title: The Last Olympian
Author: Rick Riordan
Number of Pages:  381 (paper back)

In my book The Last Olympian the protagonist is Percy Jackson. Percy is a son of Poseidon who is later discovered to be the child of the great prophecy. One of Percy's most remarkable traits is bravery. He demonstrates this trait throughout the book and to me specifically in the section where he bathes in the flaming river Styx in the underworld to bear the "curse of Achilles" and thus attempt to save the gods (page 135-137).

The Witches

Title: The Witches
Author: Ronald Dahl
Pages red: about 30

In my book, I have two main characters. One of them is a boy and the second one is his grandmother.
Boy's parents are Norwegian but his father has business in England, so the boy had been born there.

The boy: The author (the narrator) describes himself as seven-eight years old boy. His parents died in car trash. Their car skidded off the road and went tumbling down into a rocky ravine. The boy was the only one that survived because he was sitting into the back seat. He doesn't say anything special about himself but I understood that he is scared of witches and he can't believe that his grandmother's stories are true.

After the car trash the boy is living in Norway with his grandmother.

The grandmother: She is Norwegian too. She knows many stories about witches. The lady is tremendously old and wrinkled. Her body is massive wide.

Examples from the book:
  1.  "This old lady, as far as I could gather, was just about the only surviving relative we had on either side of our family". (page 12)
  2.  "She sat there majestic in her armchair, filling every inch of it. Not even a mouse could have squeezed in to sit beside her". (page 14)

Hero's Song
In the book Hero's Song by Edith Pattou the main character is a boy barely out of his teens, his name is Collun. Collun has hazel eyes and short black, brown hair. So far in the book Collun is talented in growing crops, he has grown crops in land that hadn't been able to sprout a seed for years! He also has a gift of medicine he treats minor illnesses and sometimes people who farm more in the highlands come to him for advice! Collun is also careful especially when he goes out on foot to search for his sister Nessa. On the way to search for his sister his best friend follows him and jumps him halfway there Collun gets really mad because he had been so scared searching for his blade ready to throw it at his enemy! "He said Inkberrow in particular? Are you sure?" Collun asked, more sharply than he had intended. Rince nodded, uneasy. "Talisen...," Collun began, his body tense. "I know, I know, but lets not go jumping to conclusions," Talisen said. "We should leave, right now." Collun reached for his pack."

The Midnight Mayor

The Midnight Mayor
By Kate Griffin

This book has 410 pages
The main character in this book is Matthew Swift. He is a detective has blue eyes, blond hair and special powers. He solves mysteries and talks about his life. Right now in the book he is trying to find out who killed the midnight mayor. Here is a example of how he is tslking about himself:
Pain, no room for anything else. Just pain. Time went by. Dont know how much. Watch fused to wrist; burnt. No clocks. Mobile phones somewhere in my bag, but my bag wasn't on my shoulder. Wasn't near at hand. I raised my head. Drying blood crackled like velcro. I saw my feet. They were wearing someone else's shoes. Took me a minute to remember why. Page 3 (the beggining of the story.)

Velcro means something like fastened, joined or fixed.

The Golden Compass- Marija

Hey Guys!

We all get a fresh start! Second semester has started and I plan to read more, and what better way to start second semester with a astonishing and interesting book titled "The Golden Compass". As always, at the beginning of each blog post I will have a picture of the book and as well as what I have read so far, and then for this blog post I will need to find a word I do not understand, as well as the definition and the sentence it came from :) So I hope you enjoy this blog post :)

Information About the Book:

Title: The Golden Compass

Author: Philip Pullman

Number of pages: 399

How the book looks like:

What has happened in the book so far?

Lyra lives in a very different world. In this world human souls exist externally in the form of daemons, who are animal, spiritual beings that constantly accompany their human to comfort, and always be with. Lyra and her beloved daemon, Pantalaimon, await Lyra's uncle, Lord Arsiel at Jordon College where they will listen in on the lecture he gives to the scholars. After Lyra realizes she is to sneak into a room where she is prohibited from entering, she seeks even greater pleasure in listening on the lecture. Just before the lecture is about to start, Lyra and her daemon hide into the wardrobe, thus Lyra sees the colleges Master but some poison in the Tokay that was set out for Lord Arsiel, when the Master sets out to find the scholars, Lord Arsiel enters the room and he sees the Tokay and takes it, Lyra immediately jumps out of the closet and tells him that the Tokay is poisoned. Lord Arsiel, who was in shock, tells her to go back into the hiding place and to make no sound. He also tells her to keep a close eye on the Master to see his expression when he realizes that Lord Arsiel did not drink the Tokay. The lecture has been about the mysterious "Dust" and how Lord Arsiel believes that there is another city, a parallel universe. The whole point of the lecture was to convince the scholars and the master and other important people that were present for this meeting to fund the Lord for his expedition. After, when the lecture is over and the scholars leave, Lyra, who has fallen asleep in the closet, is woken up by her uncle. She tells him what she had saw (Masters facial expressions) and then he tells her to go to her room, and that he has to leave Jordon. When Lord Arsiel leaves, and Lyra goes with her daemon to her dorm, in another setting, a conversation between the Master and the librarian who have been close for a very long time, talk about the danger the girl is in. The Master had only attempted to poison the Lord because it provided Lyra a longer period of safety, and now that the Lord is still alive, Lyra is imposed to great danger, and it will come sooner than it would have if the Lord had been poisoned.

That is my quick summary for the first thirty pages! :) Here are the words that were foreign to me:

Mahogany:

Definition: Any of various tropical American evergreen tress of the genus Swietenia, valued for their hard, reddish-brown wood.
Sentence Used: The places here were laid with gold, not silver, and the fourteen seats were not oak benches, but mahogany chairs with velvet cushions.

Skullduggery Pleasant Kingdom of the Wicked
Derek Landy
606pg.
For my quarter 3 book report I am reading Skullduggery Pleasant: Kingdom of the Wicked. This is the 8th book in the series. The novel is about mortal people getting magical powers. Skullduggery and Valkyrie have to find out how the mortals are getting their powers and stop it before magic becomes exposed to the world. Irreversible. Irreversible: impossible to reverse. If we’re unlucky it might cause irreversible brain damage.
