Delirium
by Lauren Oliver
Lena likes to run with her friend, and she used to be afraid of the disease 'love', as her mother was said to have committed suicide because of falling in love. Lena was usually alone in school, and had one best friend, Hana Tate, who was also her only friend.
The antagonist in this novel is technically the community's rules against love, which is why Lena and Alex cannot be together, and they are forced to run away from the community in order to be together. The conflict in the book is basically man vs society, because Lena has to find a way to hide her love for Alex from the community, and has to protect herself in order to not get caught and cured. A more specific antagonist in the book would be the cure, which basically removes any pleasurable, affectionate, or loving memories and feelings from ones brain, which gives them no temptation to connect with others in a loving way, and they can never experience love again for the rest of their life. They get paired up to a person who matches their knowledge, personality, and attitude, and they stay with the person for the rest of their life. They say that the cure makes you happy and peaceful, and brings the ideal life ahead of you. But is it really true?
