Title: 4:50 From Paddington
Author: Agatha Christie
Number of pages read: 130/217
In my novel there are two protagonists: Jane Marple and Lucy Eyelsbarrow. Miss Marple is an elderly woman living St Mary Mead with her maid. She is an avid gardener and a retired detective. Miss Marple is described as "fluffy and dithery in appearance, but inwardly as sharp and as shrewd as they make them.". She has very good connections which is shown by the people she contacts when she begins her investigation. She contacts "My nephew Raymond's second boy, David, who is, I am almost sure, in British Railways.", "Griselda's boy Leonard who is so very knowledgeable about maps.", and of course, Lucy Eyelsbarrow.
Miss Marple asks Lucy to assist her in the investigation because, being an old and frail woman, she is not physically capable of investigating the suspected crime scene. Lucy is 32 years old and works in domestic labour. She is very reputable in her field of work and in high demand. Her career choice was very surprising since she was a Mathematics major at Oxford and was always expected to "take up a distinguished academic career". Lucy never works in any household for more than 2 weeks even though she has been offered large amounts of money to work for a family permanently. She lives in London alone.
The antagonist has not been revealed yet since it is a murder mystery but I am fairly certain that the gardener is the guilty one. He knows the property better than anyone but Lucy dismisses him as a suspect because he is old and deaf. I personally don't think age and hearing ability come into play when you strangle someone, throw their body out of a train window, and then stuff them into an old sarcophagus from Naples. Besides, everyone knows the help are always the murderers! (So perhaps it's Mrs Kidder?)
