The City of Bones

I'm reading a book called "The City of Bones" by Cassandra Clare and I currently read 419/553.

The main characters in my novel are Jace and Clary. They are both approximately fifteen years old. Jace is tall, has blond hair and thinks that he is extremely attractive. I concluded this from two paragraphs in the book. In the first chapter “Pandemonium”, Clary sees Jace and his friend Alec:
“She raised herself up on tiptoe, trying to see over the crowd. The two guys had stopped at the door and seemed to be conferring with each other. One of them was blond, the other dark haired.”
Jace is always wearing dark clothes and his body is covered with strange marks (chapter “Shadowhunter”):
“He was wearing the same dark clothes he'd had on the night before in the club. His arms were bare and covered with faint white lines like old scars.”

Clary, on the other hand, is quite the opposite from Jace - she has red hair, isn't that tall and thinks that she is not that pretty. This is explained in the second chapter “Secrets and lies”:
“People always told Clary that she looked like her mother, but she couldn't see it herself. The only thing that was similar about them was their figures: They were both slender, with small chests and narrow hips. She knew she wasn't beautiful like her mother was. To be beautiful you had to be willowy and tall. When you were as short as Clary was, just over five feet, you were cute. Not pretty or beautiful, but cute. Throw in carroty hair and a face full of freckles, and she was a Raggedy Ann to her mother's Barbie doll.”

In this book there are humans, half-angels, and demons. The humans are referred to by the half-angels as “mundanes”. Simon, the best friend of Clary, is a mundane. Jace and Clary are half angels - they have both the blood of an angel and of a human. Their job is to kill demons.

From what I read so far, Jace is trying to help Clary find her memories since someone has put a lock in her head so that she can't remember where her mother hid the mortal cup. The mother hid it from Valentine, who is the antagonist in the book. Valentine was a half-angel just like Jace and his job was to kill demons. Valentine, however, didn't seek to kill demons but to gain as much power from them as possible. He needed the mortal cup to make demons, so as soon as Clary's mother found that out, she hid the mortal cup from him and ran away. For the time being I see only the other characters talking about Valentine, but I can't imagine what he is like.
