The first obstacle that Gemma faces is the one that forces other things to happen. Gemma is an ordinary teenage girl, and like many other teenagers, Gemma doesn't like it when her mom says she cant handle things on her own. Gemma wants to go to London, but her mom wont allow her to go. Eventually Gemma runs away, and gets one of her "visions". And in the vision she saw her mom suicide. She finally found her mom, but she was dead like in her visions. There is more to this story but you would have to read the book on your own to find out more.
The second obstacle that Gemma faces was because of the first one. Gemma was sent to a school for girls called Spence. In this school she gets friends and faces many weird things... Girl things. Its hard for her and confusing due to the things that have happened before. She doesn't understand many things but she feels like she is prepared because of her visions. She helps a girl that is being bullied not get in trouble, because the bully tried to blame the victim for stealing her ring. But Gemma proved that she didn't.
The third obstacle also was because of the first one. Gemma found out that her mom's death was different than she thought. There was more behind it and what might have happened. I cant tell you any more because it would give the book away. You'll understand if you read it!
