Shortly before the conflict, the novel tell us about a new vizier who arrived in Travnik but he had never seen this city. Then he obtained a elephant which looks bigger than it is actually.
The elephant loved to walk along the narrow streets of the city and because of the huge size it ruin everything behind him.
Then the conflict was about how all people are dissatisfied of the elephant but none of them had the courage to complain his minds to the Vizier. Later in the story there is an internal conflict. After a time a man named Aljo, only decided to share elephant's damages with the Vizier. Aljo lived on a hillside and because of that, he saw everything that had happened with the people in the city. He summoned up the courage and went to the city but while he descending the hillside, he decided that this was not a good idea and then he went back.
