I have spent the fall break in Sweden in town Gothenborg. It is
quite interesting country with lots of parks and museums. What
I liked the most is that the museums are kids oriented. When I say that I meen there are lot of activities for kids in each museum I visited. The character I have seen around a lot is Pippi Longstocking so I decided to read about the author.The author of Pippi Longstocking is Astrid Lindgren. She was born in Sweden on a farm near town Vimmerby on November 14, 1907 as Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson. She died in 2002. She had nice childhood on a farm with her three siblings. They all had to work on the farm together with maids and farm helpers. Her love for books was born there on the farm. At the age of 18 when Astrid was working in the local newspapers she got pregnant. She decided to leave to Copenhagen where she had her son Lars. In 1931 in Stocholm she met Sture Lindgren and got married. Three years later their daughter Karin was born. It was Karin lying sick in a bed when the first story of Pippi Longstocking was told. Astrid used the name invented by her daughter and made up stories to entertain her. She wrote down the stories about Pippi Longstocking for Karin’s tenth birthday. Astrid also offered them to a publishing company but was rejected. The stories were published in 1945. She wrote many other books for children. Astrid
showed quintessence of Sweden through her characters. The time she lived in was quite hard, the
Second World War, her husband died and she was left alone with two kids. She used humor in her books to overcome adversities in her life. Pippi Longstocking made Astrid Lindgren popular all over the world. Pippi was the main character in many movies and series. Astrid is still the world’s most important children’s book author.
