Literacy Circle Notes

1. What did you think of the fact that the children from Joseph (the father), and Niang the stepmother, were being treated differently/better than the children from Joseph and Adelaine's mother?

Answer: We thought that it was really unfair, because every child should be treated the same especially in this case, and every child deserves to be respected the same way. There should be equality between the children

2. Did anything surprise you about the fact that Adelaine's father was willing to pay Adelaine college, if she will win a writing competition?

Answer: We were quite surprised, because during this time period, girls were usually not working, and didn't go to college, and in Adelaine's family, everybody hated her.

3. What was going through your mind, when Adelaine decided to start in a medical school, and to become an internal specialist?

Answer: We were surprised, because at first she wanted to start a career as an author

4. Can someone summarize the part when Adelaine goes to America?

Answer: Adelaine moved to America, where she married, and decided to start a career as an internal specialist

5. How did you feel when Adelaine realized that her husband has been lying to her multiple times, and was not always being honest with her?

Answer: We felt angry, because we thought that it wasn't fair towards Adelaine, because she has been through a lot in her childhood and she didn't deserve that

Literary Luminary

Literary Luminary

1. Quote: "Don't trust anyone. Be a cold fish. I hurt no one, and no one can hurt me"
By: Adelaine
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine the main character made up this quote when she felt helpless, and when she came up with that idea.

2. Sentence: "I knew that I was the least loved child because I was a girl, and because my mother had died giving birth to me."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine describes why her family hate her so much, and she describes what had happened the reason of the death of her mother.

3. Sentence: "My mother died, two weeks after my birth, with five doctors at her bedside. She only was thirty years old, and I had no idea what she looked like."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine talks about her feelings about her mother, and explains her death in detail again.

4. Sentence: "I knew that my family hated me, but I did have one person, that loved me and took care of me, and that was my aunt Baba."
Reason for choosing, because Adelaine talks about her life, and about a person that actually loved her.

5. Quote: "No matter what else people may steal from you, they will never be able to take away your knowledge."
Reason for choosing, because those are very wise words, coming from a young girl, and because it was something that Adeline try;y believed in.

The Chocolate War - Summarizer

                                                          The Chocolate War

For my job, I was the Summarizer of my group. I had to write a summary on what we read for our first group meeting together. We all chose to read The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. We read until Chapter 10 and it was 67 pages long. The book switches from one scene to the next and back another scene so it might be a little confusing.

The book started off with a boy named Jerry Renault trying to make the football team as a high school quarterback. Then in the next scene, Archie, the Leader of the Vigils, who are an organization who run the school, and Obie, his assistant, are selecting who should be in the Vigil group or not. They select 10 people, one of which includes Jerry Renault. During the selection, we learn that Jerry lives alone with his father because his mother died of cancer. Then a couple of days later, Archie ordered twenty thousand boxes of chocolate for the school's annual fair. So they are selling double to make the school satisfied. Then the interviews begin. The first person to be interviewed was Roland Goubert, the wide receiver of the school football team. He was very nervous because of the way Archie acted towards him and he did not have a clue what he was doing there. He was told a mission by Archie. His mission was that he had to go to a classroom, but not just any classroom, but Brother Leon's classroom, and unscrew all of the screws inside the room. During the day, before the mission, Brother Leon made a straight "A" student think he was a cheater but it was just a fake thing to do and made all of the other people in the class look bad and look like clueless kids. That night, as the Goober started unscrewing everything in the classroom, it took him two hours to do one row of seats and thought it would take him all night and all day the next day but he got help from about a dozen people in black clothes and masks who helped him throughout the night and they finished in three hours.

1984 Conflict

Boris Bulatovic
George Orwell
Conflict and Obstacles
There are many conflicts and obstacles in 1984 by George Orwell. Winston the main character faces many obstacles which prevent him from reaching his goal. There are many conflicts in the book both internal and external.
Most of the internal conflicts in the novel arise from Winstons’s depression and sadness in his life, he feels as though he has no purpose. They also arise from his suspicions that the Party controls everything and has ultimate power over everyone. In the beginning of the novel when we are introduced to Winston he is extremely depressed and miserable and that depression and sadness is mostly caused because of his hatred towards the Party. He cannot be happy with just letting the Party have control so this is internal, Man vs. Self. Even though Winston's unhappiness is caused by the Party Winston's is disturbed with his angst about the Party.
The internal conflict comes from Winston himself. After he meets Julia, who is a free-spirit who also works in the Ministry of Truth, he is constantly paranoid about being caught rebelling against the all-powerful Party. It is almost as if there is a haze over his happiness, which is always present.
The external conflicts in this novel are caused by repression and fear, repression and fear the Party puts on its pawns. Winstons and other members of the Party are constantly being watched by Big Brother, which leaves the pawns in continuous fear of the punishment of rebellion. The Party in the novel maintains that external fear through constant examples of encouraging the turning in of friends, punishments and propaganda.
Other external conflicts come at the ending of the novel with Winston's torture and slow degradation of his body and mind. These torture techniques are external conflicts.
Winston faced many obstacles in the novel. The main one being external he had to battle and rebel against a giant massive all powerful Party this is the main cause of all of his issues. The Party is what caused his conflict without them, Winston would be happy and everything would be utopian. Winston's goal is to obliterate the Party so without the party Winston would not have a goal, the party is what stands between Winston and his happiness.
The other obstacle that Winston faced was himself. His conscious is the reason he even rebelled in the first placed, without his conscious he would be happy and would not combat the oppressive system.

The obstacles and the Party in the end get the better of Winston. This is stated in the final sentence of the novel.

1984 - Conflict and Obstacles

The main conflict in the novel is the conflict between Winston and the Society, i.e. man vs. society. The conflict arises when Winston starts questioning the world around him, his position in such a world and the purpose of his life. He realizes that the world he has helped create is fake, that it is dominated by fear and hypocrisy. He feels disillusioned and lonely.

He lives a meaningless life, devoid of any emotions. He has come out of a failed, loveless marriage. He has no close family members or ties. He works for the Government, in the Ministry of Truth and he actively works for the system. Ironically, while he works for the Ministry of Truth, his job is to manipulate the truth, change historical records and create the new truth, as designed by the Government. He is aware that the life shaped by the Big Brother is false and that there is no space for individuality and personal freedom and entrepreneurship.
Winston realizes that by deleting and changing history and installing systems to monitor, manipulate and suppress any rebellious behavior and actions, the Government is preventing changes and progress and is reducing life to mere existence devoid of any feelings and purpose.
He wants to know what it was like before the totalitarian revolution. He decides to rebel on the personal level, but is sadly aware that the system cannot be changed with individual actions only. He decides to rebel in secret, knowing that he is putting life at risk if he gets caught.

There are two obstacles that Winston encounters in his struggle for freedom and change:

·         Hypocrisy and betrayal by the people he trusted
·         Weakness of the individual caused by the fear of the unknown and the fear of the reprisal

The change in his life starts when he is approached secretly by Julia, a colleague, working with him in the Ministry of Truth, who shows her  feelings for him. They embark on a relationship and share feelings, which itself was not in conformity with the system that promoted loveless relationships. Winston then decides to keep diary, and get close to the Brotherhood.

Fearing for his own safety, Winston’s communication and interaction is reduced to three people: Julia, Mr. Charrington who rents the room for secret dates with Julia, and O’Brien, a member of the Inner Party, a man who they believe is part of the Brotherhood. He feels that he can trust no one else in a society in which friend betrays friend and child betrays parent.
Winston and Julia’s small hopes are destroyed when they are arrested by the Thought Police, who surround them in their “secret” apartment. They are further disappointed when they find out that Mr. Charrington is a member of the Thought Police and that their every movement during the past months has been monitored.  Furthermore, when tortured at he Ministry of Love, Winston realizes that O’Brien is supervising the torture.
The betrayal of the people that he trusted ultimately crush him and make him even more disillusioned. He loses faith in people and he no longer believes a change is possible.

Winston is ultimately released by the Thought Police. However, he awaits the punishment and knows he will be executed. Julia admits that she had betrayed their love. To his own astonishment and disappointment, Winston feels no longer any desire for her. He feels emotionally dead. The only hope he had was now gone. Instead, he decided to have a drink at the Chestnut Street Cafe.

Winston knows that it is only a matter of time before the Party kills him. However, when the telescreen shows the news of the army’s latest success, he is overcome with joy. He shows openly he supports the system and he is defeated by the system.  He admits that there is no hope for the individual in the face of the system, human weakness and fear for existence. One has to obey and abide by rules to be safe, even if that means leading an empty life. The Party finally controls Winston. His defeat is summed up in the closing sentence, “He loved Big Brother.”

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry

Gathering Blue, a book by Lois Lowry talks about Kira's struggles and how her whole life is basically a conflict.

The conflict in this book is definitely external. Throughout the novel, Kira learns more about her society and how unfair and horrible they are. Moreover, so far in the book the conflicts were with the people in her village. One example of Man v.s. Man was when Kira was taking some carrots from the ground to have something to eat. While she was doing that a women came to her and stole her carrots. The women took advantage of her and her inability to run with her deformed leg. She didn't yet overcome this obstacle but I believe that she will by addressing the whole society. My guess is that her problems and inequality would become somewhat of conflict between her and the society.

Another example for a Man v.s. Man conflict is with Vandara. Vandara is a woman which wants to steal Kira's property and build something of her own need. She thinks that she would be easily able to do that because of Kira's deformed leg but it doesn't really end up being easy for Vandara. Vandara got into an argument with Kira talking about how how she will rebuild her own cott on Kira's property. But, the protagonist stayed strong and didn't let her.

Hush Hush - Main Conflict

Kiara Andjelkov
Hush Hush
Becca Fitzpatrick
400/400

Hush Hush, is a book built on conflicts. Without these prominently occurring conflicts the book would portray a perfect life, Utopia. One of the main conflicts though is that Nora, one of the main characters, feels very conflicted about patch. She ponders whether she can trust him or not. She even reaches the point where she has to battle the feeling of dislike. Throughout the book Nora struggles with this problem as there is a question always in the back of her mind, is Patch dangerous? But as time slowly goes by she lowers her guard, which is when she truly becomes in danger. Later in the book she finds out Patch's secret which makes her go back to her conflicted place. She has a internal conflict since she is debating whether she can trust Patch, but she also has an external conflict with him as shown in this text from the book:

“I want the truth,” I said, struggling not to cry. “Did you come to school to kill me? Was that your aim right from the start?” A muscle in Patch’s jaw jumped.

“Yes”I swiped a tear that dared escape.

“Are you gloating inside? That’s what this is about, isn’t it? Getting me to trust you so you could blow it up in my face” I knew I was being irrationally irate. I should have been terrified and frantic. I should have been doing everything to escape. The most irrational part of all was that I still didn’t want to believe he would kill me, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t smother that illogical speck of trust.

“I get that you’re angry-,” said Patch

“I am ripped apart!” I shouted.

(Hush, Hush. Becca Fitzpatrick. P. 301)

In the quote above it is very clear that Patch and Nora are having a conflict. And it is clearly a big one since they are having a discussion about whether he is going to kill her or not. Although, despite the fact that he wants to kill her she still is conflicted about whether to trust him or not since he hasn't killer her until now. She is not just fighting with him but herself as well.

The Chaos

The Chaos

The book I am reading is called The Chaos by Rachel Ward. The main conflict of the book is the future, because Adam, one of the main protagonists who can see people's death dates when he looks them in the eyes. When he arrived in London, he saw many people with the exact same death date, which is was on January 1, 2027, and Adam saw that there is going to be a fire, that will kill more than half of the people from London. Adam tries to warn people, but they don't believe him, and he feels helpless. Adam also has a problem with Sarah, because Sarah had a nightmare before she even met Adam, and Adam always appeared in her nightmare, and tried to take away her Baby and run with it into the fire. At first when she sees Adam in the new school, she runs away from him, but when Adam read her number, he saw that she was one of the survivers and he wanted to find out more about Sarah, but she refuses to meet him and tries to avoid him.

In the Bus that drove to London, Adam met a guy named Junior, and he is really curious about Adam, because he saw his notebook where Adam notes every persons death date, and when Junior saw his name in his notebook, he started discussing with Adam, and wanted to know what his big secret was. But Adam never told him.

The Hunger Games - Aleksa Djuraskovic

The book 'The Hunger Games' was written by Suzanne Collins and its the first book of the 'Hunger Games' trilogy. This dystopian novel follows a girl called Katniss who spends the whole book fighting for her life and that is the main conflict. The hunger games forces 24 children to fight for their life and for Katniss to survive she needs to kill the other contestants. The conflict that she faces is having to see people around her dying and make sure that she does not get killed. The first obstacle that Katniss faces is when the strong kids from the rich districts in Panem corner her in a tree. Katniss overcomes this obstacle by dropping a killer wasp nest on them and gets a bow and arrow from them. The other obstacle she faces during this bloody competition is when her and Peeta need to face of with the final remaining contestant but before they can do this they get chased by dogs that are actually genetically modified to be deadly killing machines. Katniss overcomes this obstacle by managing to fight of the dogs and shoot the last remaining contestant.

The Dangerous days of Daniel X- Conflict

The novel I am reading is called "The Dangerous Days of Daniel X". I am almost finished reading the book, I still have to completely finish reading the resolution of the book.
In the novel there are several conflicts. Although the major conflict is that Daniel's fight with Ergent Seth (Man vs Supernatural). The conflict commences when, Daniel meets a girl named Phoebe, and instantly falls in love with her. After a while Phoebe gets kidnapped by Seth, when Daniel finds her, she turns into Ergent Seth. Daniel realizes that Seth changed himself to get to him. While Daniel fights Ergent Seth, he gets shot in the stomach, with an Oopus 24/24 (a gun type that The Prayer had used to kill his parents). The falling action of the book is when Seth locks Daniel in a jail. The resolution of the book for me is still to be discovered. Although I have some prediction on how Daniel would rescue himself. As I mentioned in my previous blogs, Daniel has to extraordinary ability to project his parents or anyone from his imagination, I think he might use his ability to trick Seth.

Throne of Glass- Main conflict

Throne of Glass
Sarah J. Maas
The main conflict of the book is man vs. supernatural. The conflict is that competitors are killed by someone one by one and it is unknown until it got discovered by Celeana. That someone is Cain the antagonist in the book. Cain is killing the competitors so he can get a magical bond and get stronger in order to win the competition so he can become the King's champion and later become free like any other competitor in the competition.

Celeana's main goal is to win the competition but while wanting to win the competition she has different things going outside of the competition that can concern the competition.

The first obstacle that Celeana goes through is that she is very weak as in physically because she was in a slave camp for about year and you get barely any food, so her stomach got weak and her body has also become weak. When she is taken to the castle, the food the castle serves consists of meat and after eating it she wants to throw up because the stomach isn't used to that kind of food. She is weak and she has to train in order to be able to win so this is an obstacle for her considering the fact she has barely got any food in her stomach.

The second obstacle that Celeana goes through is that she gets attacked from Cain because she sees Cain killing a competitor.  Celeana gets attacked and she gets hurt causing her to become physically weak again because Cain wasn't a human being and getting bitten by him can maybe even cause Celeana to die, luckily she was saved by Nehemia the princess of Ellywe.

Main conflict- Ender's Game

                                                        Ender's Game

                                                    By Orson Scott-Card

I have finished the book, Ender's Game. It was a really good and thorough book.
The main conflict was when Ender was sent to Commander school, which is only for the most intelligent and most strategic soldiers. Normally, you would not make it until the age of 16, but Ender went when he was 10. He made it because of the battles he had fought against other school armies in his battle school days. Every army tried to do different things against Ender's own army, and they even put in two armies but that didn't help. And he also got in a fight with a thirteen year old kid and killed him. So that was just proof he had and self-defense. So he was sent to commander school. But now he is the most important human on Earth. He has to defeat the buggers, another civilization of humans, but ants. They want to defeat the real humans because they want to be the only living being in the universe.
The book I am reading is called "This book is not good for you".  The book is written by Pseudonymous Bosch.  There are 3 protagonists and there names are Cassandra Cass for short then Max Ernest and Yo-Yoji they are Cass and Max are 11 and Yo-Yoji is 12.  The story is about the perfect chocolate and for that they need legendary tuning fork.  But the problem starts at the point when they found that they aren't the only ones who are looking for the fork.  And to make thing even worse it might not even be real.  then evil chef comes and kidnaps Cass's mother. Then they luckily found the fork but Cass's mother is still kidnapped and all they know is that she is is the zoo some where

172 Hours on The Moon Conflict

"172 Hours on The Moon" a sci-fi novel written by Johan Harstad is divided into two sections in terms of conflict. Yes the book it self is divided into two sections, "The Earth" and "The Sky".

In the first section, The Earth, the main conflict was man vs fate. Every single character knew what was going to become of them if they had left themselves in the situations that they were in so they had to try anything which they think might help them out of their situations. For example Antoine was in one of the situation where he is regretting on his choices that had led to his girlfriend and him breaking up so he is using NASA's raffle as a therapy. The same way the other characters are also using the raffle as a therapy for different reasons relating to their pathetic lives.

In the Second part which I'm half way through had the conflict of man vs extra terrestrial as now in the part which I'm reading now the author is foreshadowing that there is something else close to them someone or something who they weren't expecting. Now when they are in the moon and you hear strange noises or find strange unearthly objects then you are more likely to think that you are dealing with an alien rather than a catfish or any animal for that matter. This was (no kidding) my reasoning to assuming that an alien is the antagonist and therefore the conflict (according to me) is man vs terrestrials.

Conflicts in Ranger's Apprentice 4: Oakleaf Bearers

Ranger's Apprentice Book 4 by John Flanagan

The novel's main conflict is the hostility between the Temujai invasion force and the Skandia + Araulan settlement. (Man(s)vs Society) The Temujai are a group of mongol-like riders from the far east. Their hobby is invading, and Skandia just so happens to be their next target. A group of Araulans trapped in Skandia are ambushed by the Skandians, who are originally hostile to them. The Araulans tell a story of the Temujai, and both parties decide that they must unite for the greater good. The first obstacle the protagonists(Araulan party) encounter is the afore mentioned Skandian ambush, which foiled their plans of escape. There just so happens to be tracks of a large party, and the Araulan leader suspects that the footprints belong to the Temujai. He describes his suspicions, and the Skandians take them to the Skandian capital named Hallasholm to be judged by their supreme leader. The second obstacle is hiding Evanlyn's true identity. Evanlyn is a member of the Araulan party, and also the crown princess of Araulan. The whole reason the party was sent was to recover her. It just so happens that the Skandian Oberjarl(Supreme leader) Ragnak swore a oath to avenge the death of his sons by killing the Araulan royal family. This is why Evanlyn's identity has to remain a secret.

The city of Ember

Jeanne DuPrau

By Matija

The main conflict in the novel “The city of Ember” is that the city is getting quite delapidated meaning it’s losing its resources and falling apart. Without resources Ember will soon be destroyed. Lack of food and light makes a normal life impossible. The conflict is man vs. society.

Lina faces many obstacles along the journey. The first one is that she cannot decipher the letter she feels is important for the survival of the city. She asks friends for help and one of them realizes the letter was instructions from the builders how to find the exit from Ember. With the help of her friend Doon Lina deciphers the whole letter which leads two of them to face another obstacle that are devious city guards looking for them with sham accusations.

Lina and Doon were deciphering the letter for number of days. They realize the answer is in the pipeworks so Doon explores it every day. When they finally decipher the instructions Doon finds the E letter in the pipeworks so they go together to search for the exit around that area. Along the way they find a mystery door. The next day Doon finds out the Major of the city is sitting behind that door in the room full of canned food delicacies the citizens of Ember haven’t seen for a number of years. Doon and Lina decide to report to the main guard that Major is stealing supplies from the citizens thinking he will be sent to jail. They find the door mentioned in the instructions and figure out that the way to escape is by a canoe down the river. On the day Lina and Doon planed to go out of the city the guards start looking for them. Lina gets caught by the guards which threatens their plan for escape.

I, Robot 2 obstacles

Image result for i robot bookThe book I,Robot by Isaac Asimov is a book with a lot of action.
