This nonfiction novel is called Guts. It is set in the early years of Gary's life, during the time period of his youth. From 1939 to 1970 or so, Gary (the author) has had many adventures due to his survivalist, naturalist, woodsman style of living. It describes the many close-shave encounters he has had during those years, while he was off doing the Iditarod, or surviving in the woods. The Iditarod is a race in which one must drive a dog-sled in subzero temperature to a certain goal. He did this twice, and one of the times he was nearly trampled to death by a moose. It takes place in Canada. The stories all happen either in Minnesota - where he was born -, Canada or Alaska. These settings are important because they reinforce the theme that survival can be harsh due to bad weather, or that two environments close to each other  can be completely different The two words that I learned were smoldering and downstream. Downstream means when a person or thing is further down the stream compared to the protagonist's position. Smoldering is an adjective which can describe a fire burning slowly with smoke bu no flame. The smoldering canoe was downstream Bobby's position in the water.
