Article I am reading: A selective review of selective attention
research from the past century
Author of the article: Jon Driver
I am currently reading a article on selective attention (one of the various sections in neurobiology). The article was published in the British Journal of Psychology in 2001. The article explains on how to some extent, our awareness of the world on what we choose to attend to, not merely on the stimulation of our senses. How many sounds enter our ear (for example when we are in a full room) but how we are only able to pick out those sounds that are relevant to us. We have all had moments when we didn't see certain things or hear certain things because our mind was engaged into something else. Like when our name is mentioned in a conversation that is not ours we immediately hear it and it catches our attention, unlike if it were not our name or something irrelevant to us we would just continue our conversation without noticing/hearing the other conversation. As well as what we see and feel depends not only on the information entering our senses but on what we choose to attend to.
Interesting/new vocabulary:
1. Akin
Sentence in article: Shifting the eye is akin to shifting the spotlight
Defintion: Same as
Used in sentence: Shifting the eye is the same as shifting your spotlight (your attention)
2. Stimuli (Plural)
Sentence in article: As those which include more target stimuli and/or require more perceptual operations
Defintion: (In psichology) it is a detectable change in the external or internal enviornment. The ability of an organism or organ to respond to external stimuli is called sensitivity.
Used in sentence: Something has happened wihich makes the organism react to all stimuli in a new way.
