The protagonist of the novel is Santiago, he is a shepherd who is determined and curious to learn all he can about the world. His parents wanted him to become a priest but he wouldn't because he was too curious about the world that he was willing to do the worst job on this planet just to see the world. Along one of his journeys he meets a woman that reads dreams and tells him that he has a treasure waiting for him somewhere near the pyramids in Egypt, then he meets Melchizedek who claims that he is the king of Salem and confirms that there is a treasure waiting for Santiago.
