In my first blog post about Inkheart, I told you at the end that Meggie finds out her dad’s secret: he can read characters out of books! But he can’t control it, so when he reads aloud, a character of this book might come out, and a person from our world will go in. Mo also explains, that, of course not on purpose, he read to Meggie’s mum aloud (before he knew about his skill). Capricorn, Basta (one of his men) and Dustfinger came out of Inkheart and her mother went in. He tried so many times to read her back, but as I already said, he couldn’t control who goes and who comes when he reads aloud.
But why are Elinor, Mo and Meggie in Capricorn’s village? They think, it is because Capricorn wants Mo to read him and all his men back in their story, like Dustfinger does. But then they find out, that Capricorn wants Mo to read other things out of books, like money or evil creatures, but he doesn’t even think about going back in his story! He says, that he likes it better in this world, because in Inkheart’s world he was just a minor character, here he is the king. Capricorn even stole all the editions of Inkheart and burned them. Also, Meggie, Mo and Elinor find out why Dustfinger betrayed them: Dustfinger wants to go back in his story and Capricorn promised he will bring him back, but of course he can’t. Mo forgives him, but Meggie is still skeptical. After Dustfinger helps them and Farid (a boy who Mo read out of the story of “Alibaba and the fourty thieves”, because Capricorn wanted the treasures) escape, a haunt starts. Basta and Flatnose (another of Capricorn’s evil men) nearly find them but they trick them and get away again. They get to a town, and stay there for a while, but then Elinor pronounces that she will go home, but not before she gave Mo the address of Fenoglio, the writer of inkheart, because he might still have a copy.
Mo and Meggie visit him, but Dustfinger is waiting (together with Farid, who admires him) by the car, because he is afraid of meeting his creator. Fenoglio first is very unsympathetic, but then Mo explains the whole story to him. Sadly, all his copies got stolen too. Fenoglio now wants to meet Dustfinger, but he is so afraid that he runs away, together with Farid. Meggie and Mo stay with Fenoglio, because Mo has some idea, how he might get his wife out of the book…
If you want to know about his idea and the adventure Meggie and Mo will still experience, wait for my next post :)
This book is very imaginative and fictional. It is so funny how people can read characters out of books.
