Inkheart

Author: Cornelia Funke
Genre: Fiction, Adventure
Pages: 1- 145 (whole book: 534 pages)
Meggie, a twelve year old girl, lives alone with her father (she is not quite sure where her mother is, but he won’t give her answers, so she stopped questioning). They move a lot, because of her dad’s job, he’s a bookbinder or book doctor, how she likes to call him. Mo (her father) gets a strange visit one night, from a man which he calls “Dustfinger”, and which Meggie had never seen before. He talks to her dad and on the next day, they are leaving again. Mo says, that they are just going to visit an aunt of him, because she wants him to look at her books, but Meggie always notices it, when Mo lies. She knows that they will never come back to the place where they live. There is something strange about a man, called “Capricorn”, who her dad is very afraid of. Meggie heard Dustfinger and Mo speaking about him, but he is not telling her who he is. Meggie just knows that he must be a very bad person…
Dustfinger is coming with them, although Elinor (the aunt) is not really happy about the extra guest. Meggie sees, how Mo gives Elinor a book, he was hiding before her. She is very curious about it and follows Mo, when he hides the book in Elinor’s library. Mo notices her, but just shows her the book (called “Inkheart”) under protest.
One night, Mo is in the library fixing books, Capricorn’s men come and want the book. They threat him by telling them they would hurt Meggie, so he gives it to them and goes with them. Meggie wants to save him, but Elinor holds her back, so she will not get taken, too. Dustfinger is also gone, but comes back after a day. Then they go searching for Mo in Capricorn’s village. There, they met Capricorn, and find out, that Dustfinger told Capricorn where the book is he wants so badly. Meggie and Elinor get captured in the same room as Mo. Now, Meggie finds out about her father’s big secret and about where her mother went…
