Hello everyone! For my book project I read "The Diviners".
The main character is Evie O'Neill, and the book begins by describing a 'fashionable address at Manhattan's Upper East side.' There is a party in this house, and the hostess has a Ouija board (used for summoning spirits). She summons a ghost to liven the party, and the conversation goes like this.
"Hello" is spelled out on the Ouija board.
"What is your name, o great spirit?" The hostess asks.
"Naughty John." The ghost spells out.
"What makes you so naughty?" The hostess replies.
"You'll see." Those were the final words of Naughty John for that day.
Meanwhile, Evie is in trouble with her parents because she used her special power to tell a boy's secret. Her power is that when she picks up an object of someone, she can see a vision of something about them. The boy's family is rich, and demand a public apology. Evie says no, and is sent off to her Uncle's house in New York as 'punishment'. Her friends go to the train station to watch her leave, and give her a magazine. Then she's off.
Then, we meet Memphis Campbell. He often has dreams about his dead mother, and he has a healing power. According to the book, Memphis is 6 feet tall and has broad shoulders. It says he is very handsome.
Now, Evie meets Sam Lloyd. He is a thief, and a good one at that. He flatters her with kindness and flirts with her. Then he kisses her and takes 20$ out of her pocket while doing so. The unsuspecting Evie realizes soon after, and pesters him when he comes to her Uncle's house for an internship at the museum of Creepy Crawlies.
Jericho Jones works at her Grandfather's museum. He is a very serious person. He soon develops feelings for Evie, but is good at hiding it.
Mabel is Evie's best friend. She has thick, long brown hair. She is the pen pal of Evie, and often writes long letters about the love of her life, Jericho.
Theta Knight is a talented singer and dancer. She is strikingly beautiful. She has a best friend named Henry, who picked her up from the streets a few years ago. They bonded a lot since then, and they are both diviners.
