The city of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau Characters by Matija

Lina Mayfleet
Lina is one protagonist in the novel “The city of Ember.” She is a twelve year old girl who lives with her little sister and her grandmother. She has long dark hair that she winds around her finger whenever she is nervous. Lina is very energetic and loves to run around the city. Her dream job is to be a messenger. On the assignment day the twelve year olds pull from a bag paper with their new job. Lina pulls out a pipeworks assistant job. Luckily her classmate Doon wanted to trade jobs so Lina becomes a messinger. Lina is also very enthusiastic and curious girl. She likes to draw cities shiny and bright, completely different from Ember and hopes there are some cities besides Ember. In Ember the only light is from light bulbs. The light blackouts happen more often and Lina starts to worry about the city and their citizens. Lina is kind and caring girl. She takes care of her little toddler sister every day after work. She also takes care of her granny until she dies. Before her granny dies she tells Lina she lost something that was very important. During one of those searches Lina finds a nice box and paper full of holes with some kind of instructions. She hopes that is something that will save the city. She asks Doon to help her encrypt the message so soon they figure out it is an instruction to exit the city. Doon starts looking for the exit that is somewhere in the pipeworks. In the process Doon finds the mayor in a room full of food and other supplies that other citizens don’t have for years. Doon tells Lina about the mayor and two of them report the main guard so he can arrest the mayor.
Doon Harrow
Doon is the second protagonist in the book “The city of Ember.” He is a twelve year-old boy living with his father. Doon has dark bushy eyebrows and rumpled hair. His main wish is to find the way to save the Ember city which will make his father proud. He is very obedient boy that cares very much about his father’s opinion. On Assignment day Doon exchanges jobs with Lina and becomes a pipeworks assistant. He hopes that from the pipe works he can get closer to the generator to figure out how to repair it. Doon worries about the city falling apart and longer blackouts they experience. He was always interested in mechanics and quite talented to repair things. Doon hopes his talent might be used for saving the city. Doon likes insects and makes a book of all insects he had ever seen with drawings and detailed description. When Lina shared her discovery about exit instructions Doon does his best to use his knowledge of pipeworks for finding the exit.

Mayor Cole is the antagonist in the novel “The city of Ember.” He is the mayor of Ember. His duty is to run the city but also to take care of it and solve problems. Unfortunately the Ember city has lots of problems. It is falling apart, running out of supplies including food and light bulbs. The only ligh
t in the city is from light bulbs so the shortage is extremely important. Mayor Cole is sensitive only to his own problems. He is gathering food and light bulbs for his personal use regardless of the fact that other citizens will soon run out of them and eventually stay in complete darkness. He makes his secret supply room in a pipe works underground. The shelves in that room are completely full with various food cans while the other people are eating the same food every day. He feasts while citizens starve. He might just seem selfish but he is also greedy, cunning, and sneaky. Doon discovers mayor Cole’s  secret room and is shocked by his discovery. He could not believe that mayor has so much supplies only for himself. Doon tells Lina about it and two of them decide to inform the main city guard thinking that the mayor will be arrested for his wrongful acts.
