Katniss Everdeen had volunteered to take the place of her sister Primrose in The Hunger Games ( in book one) she and the another tribute (a boy her age named Peeta from her district) became close before the games and with the help of their mentor Haymitch (a usually drunken previous victor of the brutal games) [scroll down if you don't wish to read this book]
she and Peeta won the games together.
In book two catching fire Peeta and Katniss learn that they have to be mentors in the Quarter Quell which happens every twenty-five years since the Hunger Games began after the districts' rebelled and lost. She is distraught when President snow announces the special quality that will make the Quarter Quell different from the ordinary Hunger Games, to show that even the strongest of the citizens of the districts are weaker than the capitol the Quarter Quell tributes would be previous victors. Katniss being the only living female victor is forced to compete in the Quarter Quell.

The arena is a horror. It is a clock and at each hour that section on the "clock"
Katniss, Finnik, and Beetee are rescued from the arena after Katniss shoots down the force-field around the arena. Peeta and the other tributes are left behind by the rebels because of lack of time. After the escape district 12(Katniss's home) is blown up by the Capitol only a few hundred of thousands escape not including Peeta's family but including Katniss's family.
In Mockingjay Katniss joins up with district 13 (the rebels) and tries to unite the districts to win independence from the Capitol. She becomes their Mockingjay (under special conditions: other victor's safety and pardon, Primrose keeps her cat, she can hunt with her best friend Gale, etc.)

Katniss wins the districts over the rebels rescue the other tributes and captives from the capitol. Peeta tries to kill Katniss, they discover Peeta's memories were messed up. They try to return them this takes all the book and he is never free of nightmares Katniss trains to be in the war. She makes the star team her commander named Boggs gets his legs blown off then bleeds to death but transfers his high-tech map to Katniss tells her to kill President Snow. On the team's new mission Leeg 2 gets a dart from a trap shot into her head and dies then a big black wave kills Mitchel. Capitol mutts(mutants) kill all but Katniss, Peeta, Gale, Pollux, and Cressida. They take refuge in a shop owned by Tigris a friend of the rebels who wishes Snow dead. She makes them look like Capitol citizens and then sends them off to complete their plan. I will not give away the ending or the events right before especially a really sad one, you have to read the books yourself if you want to know.
