Chinese Cinderella

Chinese Cinderella
Adeline Yen Mah
175/205

The book I am reading is called Chinese Cinderella. It is an memoir of the author's life as an unwanted daughter. The setting of the book takes place in 1940's, in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tianjin, Beijing. The story begins in Tianjin, during that time China was in control of Japan. In August 1945 America dropped atom bombs in Japan, as a result China came under control of America.
Adeline's mother died giving birth to her. Adeline was considered bad luck by her rich family. After 1 year after his wife's Adeline's father married an french women, Niang, who treated Adeline as a servant. Jun Leigh (Adeline) was nurtured by her Aunt Baba. As time passed, her family had to moved to Hong Kong from Beijing because her father was troubled by some Japanese businessman. Adeline was still treated cruelly, and was separated from her Aunt. Adeline liked to be in school more than at home. Her siblings always were unkind to her, Niang, her stepmother, always treated Adeline unpleasantly and her father didn't seem to care about her.
The two words that were unknown to me were:

  • Predicament: A difficult, unpleasant or embarrassing moments. Pg. 148

Sentence: We understood each others predicament only too well.

  • Forlornly: Unhappy or Miserable. Pg. 159

Sentence: I spied a little girl standing forlornly beside the man kneeling on the ground with his head bowed.
