Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

I literally finished reading Me Before You this morning and although it was extremely depressing and strange to say the least, I very much enjoyed it.

Louisa Clark is a 27 year old who still lives with her parents and is basically the main supporter of her family as she works at the Buttered Bun, a cafe. As you probably guessed Louisa's family is very poor. This makes it even harder for them when the Buttered Bun closes and Louisa is left without a job. Surprisingly ( surprisingly because Louisa's CV basically comprises of nothing except that she worked at the shabby cafe and in a chicken factory ) she finds a job fairly quickly as a carer. She is employed by a rather 'strict' woman whos son is a quadriplegic ( meaning that his arms and legs are completely paraylzed.

When Louisa first works for the quadriplegic, Will, he comes across as grumpy and blunt but when she gets to know him, Louisa discovers a different Will, and kind of starts falling in love with him. But, she overhears his mother and sister talking about his previous suicide attempts and how they persuaded him to give them six months until they will consent to his suicide. Louisa then realizes that the reason she has been employed is simply to try and make Will see life differently, beyond his wheelchair, and try to prevent him from killing himself.

i know, I know, it sounds extremely depressing, but actually it was pretty amazing. I strongly suggest it unless medical things creep you out...

This book was really complex, but its vocabulary was pretty basic so I decided to get my two words from the book I started reading approximately 20 minutes ago: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, which definitely does not lack difficult words.

Word #1: ligature
Definition : anything that serves for binding or tying up, such as a band, bandage or cord. A metal band used for securing wind instruments.
Ex. It's so annoying, the ligature on my clarinet broke yesterday and I have to get a new one

Word #2: ballad
Definition : A simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed in short stanzas and adapted for singing.
She recited something that was like a poem but had melody and said it was called a ballad.
