Going Solo

The setting of Going Solo is on the ship SS Mantola in the autumn of 1938. Roald Dahl (the main character in this book) is traveling from the Port of London to Mombasa. he describes the ship as '...an old paint-peeling tub of 9,000 tons with a single tall funnel and a vibrating engine that rattled like tea-cups in their saucers on the dining-room table.'
