A dress had taken over our lives for nearly a week. This innocent picture of a dress went viral and the center topic for debate. However, my short summary is not just a fashion debate, but a scientific one as well; explaining the reason behind seeing four colors.
So first, how do we see colors? A simple question really. White light is made of the rainbow and other colors we cannot see. If we were looking at a red apple, then all the colors of the rainbow except red would be absorbed and the red would be reflected. The red light ray passes through the lens of our eyeball and to the retina. The retina sends signals to our brain depending on the different wavelengths and we see that apple as red.
You may be wondering what this has to do with some people seeing white and gold, and others blue and black. You see, sometimes, the light can affect the hues and shades of the color, for example, the early morning sunlight causes us to see differing shades of red and pink. Our brain however, is clever, and most of the time removes this extra light and shows the true color. As I said, most of the time. Sometimes it creates an optical illusion. People who see's the bright background notice that the dress is made of darker material and see black and blue. Others see that the dress is reflecting lots of light and the brain says it is white and gold. Sadly, once seen one way, it is hard to see another. Oh, and the dress is BLUE AND BLACK.

I queried about the upcoming test on pandas and pigs.
Disparity:

There was a massive disparity between panda lovers and piggy lovers.

Haha its so smart that your blog post is about the dress xD I would have never thought about doing that. I think its gold and white, unlike you. I really didn't know that the light made us see differently, I just thought were all color blind :) Great blog post I love the description and information.

Im preeeettty sure the dress is blue and black. I find this whole debate honestly very interesting because I dont understand how half of the people in the world are seeing it so differently to me?! Your blog post is very relevant and interesting :)
ReplyDeleteI personally see white and gold, and find this debate really interesting to read about. Seeing how people can see some colors differently or whatever it really is, even though I've seen this dress probably millions of times and know that it is possible for someone to see other than white and gold and for it to not be a joke I still have trouble believing it. Other than that think that it was really cool that you did an article, because I don't think anyone from our grade has done it before.
