Hoot

The book that I am reading for my mystery novel is called Hoot by Carl Hiaasen.
I have read about /292 pages at the moment.

Roy was on the bus, on the way to school when he got attacked by the school bully, Dana Matherson. His face was squished against the window and he saw a boy running. Although it looked like the boy was chasing the bus, when the bus halted at another drop-off/pick-up station, the boy kept running. The next morning he sat at the front of the bus, hoping to catch the same boy. Dana Matherson tormented him again, He punched Dana, nearly runs over a girl, jumps out the bus, and chases the bare-foot boy to a golf course where he gets hit in the head with a golf ball.

In another place, a police officer has to take care of a problem of survey stakes being mercilessly dug up from the ground, forming small holes. The officer meets a construction worker, who informs him about the mysterious person who comes and does the crime. The construction worker was the one who filled in the report because, since the criminal ad dug up his survey stakes, the construction workers were put behind schedule, losing lots of money.

Back to Roy. He gets cornered by the girl he almost ran over when he jumped out the bus. Apparently, she saw him chasing the boy and felt like she needed to confront him to tell him to "mind
your own d*** business" (sorry for the blocked swear word, it was a quote from the book). Later on,
he finds out her name is Beatrice Leep from his friend, Garrett.

The setting of the book is in Florida. It doesn't say exactly which city. It might have been in the past a bit, somewhere between 1990 and 2003, I guess. The mood is very serious and a bit ironic at times.
