All but my Life

Title: All but my Life
Author: Gerda Wissmann Klein

Number of pages: 261
This week I have been reading about when the main character Gerda and other girls from the working camp are forced to move out of their working camp and walking for days to flee their freedom, the Germans are being defeated by the Russians and the USA and everyday of travels Gerda can hear the pounding and bombing from a distance but she is forced to flee from it and the SS guards from the working camp make them walk day and night just to reach another camp further away from the war now coming up on the Germans. When they started to travel they were about 3,000 girls but  in the end about 150 only survived. They where shot if they tried to flee the endless walking and if they could not walk or were sick they would be carried in a wagon until there where too many to carry and they would dig a big whole and bury the dead and sick in it. Gerda was lucky to survive but her friend was not as lucky, her feet froze entirely as the walked through winter storms and she ended up dying, while Gerda's other friend died on the same day as they won the war. The Germans put them into another camp and planed to kill the ones whom were left but seconds before the camp was attacked and the remaining girls scattered over the camp hiding from the Germans now looking for them. Gerda and two other girls hid in a large metal tube for a night until someone called that the war was over and American soldiers were all over the camp looking for the surviving, Gerda knew this was the end of the war but she still did not feel the joy she tough she would feel at the day of her freedom, she had been captured for over 3 years and now sent to the hospital. " We waited again, There was more firing in the distance. Much later we heard shouting in Czech. A man and two women entered the factory calling: "If someone is inside, come out. The war is over!" "
