The Code Book
Simon Singh
This book is about codes. Obviously. Now, why would there be a book written about codes? Why, exactly, do we need these codes of ours? To play tricks on our friends? To put random codes into a bottle and see who's dumb enough to try to decrypt it? No, believe it or not. Codes are necessary to people to need to send a very important message. Imagine you needed to send an extemely important and top-secret message to your friend, and you didn't want anyone to be able to read it. Of course, you'd use a cipher, which is a method of replacing letters to basically hide the meaning of your message behind a meaningless jumble of letters. You could use all kinds of different ciphers, some more complex than others, to hide your message. Whether it be a top-secret message between governments, a formula for a special drink, or just the name of your best friend's crush, codes can help us in so many ways.
